Godwin Ako Gunn, the Deputy National Communication Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has formally launched his campaign to lead the party’s national communications directorate, promising a major push toward decentralizing media strategy to the grassroots level.

Gunn’s announcement marks a significant transition within the party’s public relations unit, where he has served as second-in-command alongside outgoing National Communication Officer Sammy Gyamfi. Unveiling his vision under the rally phrase “Kun Fa Yakun” (“Be, and it is”), Gunn argued that his three decades of party service have uniquely equipped him to lead the team into its next chapter.

Rather than running on a platform of total overhaul, Gunn built his narrative around continuity and expansion, commending the high standard set by the current leadership during challenging political cycles.

“The Sammy Gyamfi-led Communication Team will arguably be mentioned as amongst the best we have ever had as a party,” Gunn stated. “Bold changes like panel placements and press conferences at live locations were considerably improved. It didn’t come easy. We were fought, chased, cursed, and attacked; but at the end of the day, the fruits are there for all to see.”

Central to Gunn’s proposed platform is a shift from national-heavy messaging toward direct capacity building at local levels. He emphasized that the party’s electoral prospects depend on empowering officers in every region and constituency.

“Our next phase must see all our Branch and Constituency Executives being trained in the art and science of communication, so that together we can ensure the effective projection of the achievements of the NDC government,” Gunn said. “No one anywhere can tell the story better than you.”

Tracing his career back to his early political days as a local Assemblyman in Niiboi Town, Gunn highlighted his progression through various party organs. His credentials include a 12-year stint as a Branch Executive, four years as Chairman of the Okaikoi North Finance Committee, eight years on the Greater Accra Communication Committee, and his recent eight-year tenure as Deputy National Communication Officer.

“This rich experience is what I bring to the table,” he said. “I have served with all my heart and my abilities, and I commit myself to serve the present age and the young upcoming ones.”

The campaign declaration also featured expressions of gratitude toward senior party figures most notably NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia, former Chairman Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, and current colleagues Kakra Essamuah, Obuobia Darko-Opoku, Kwaku Boahen, and Malik Basintale. Gunn praised Gyamfi directly for his mentorship and leadership over their shared term.

“To my boss Lawyer Sammy Gyamfi, I am lost for words,” Gunn said. “If there is anything that I have to leave out, it will never be your kindness, passion, dedication, boldness, attention to detail, and above all, your love for humanity.”

As internal NDC preparations pick up pace, Gunn promised supporters that his leadership would combine grassroots accessibility with steadfast advocacy.

“As your National Communications Officer, I promise to serve you well: with humility, with passion, and a fearless voice,” Gunn concluded. “There are better days ahead.”
