    “What treasonable offence has Akatsi South committed?” Assembly Member petitions Mahama over ambulance crisis

    Assembly Member for the Wuxor, Have and Sremanu Electoral Area in the Akatsi South Municipality and NDC Communications Team Member, Hon. Japhet Festus Gbede, has petitioned President John Dramani Mahama over the prolonged absence of a functional ambulance in Akatsi South, demanding immediate government intervention to save lives in the municipality.

     

    In a strongly worded petition addressed directly to President Mahama, Hon. Gbede said Akatsi South has been without a functional ambulance since 2019, describing the situation as an unacceptable public health emergency that can no longer be allowed to continue.

     

    The Assembly Member’s petition comes against the backdrop of repeated appeals and interventions by stakeholders, including the Member of Parliament for Akatsi South and the Municipal Chief Executive, towards securing an ambulance for the municipality.

     

    Despite these efforts, Hon. Gbede said Akatsi South remains without the essential emergency medical resource, while other constituencies across the country continue to receive ambulances.

     

    He therefore posed a pointed question to the government and relevant authorities: “What exactly has Akatsi South done to deserve such prolonged neglect? What treasonable offence has this Municipality committed to justify the continued denial of an essential emergency medical resource?”

     

    He further questioned why residents of Akatsi South should be exposed to the possibility of losing their loved ones simply because the State has failed to provide an ambulance for timely emergency transportation.

     

    “This is not about NDC or NPP”

     

    Hon. Gbede, who is also a member of the NDC Communications Team, stressed that his demand should not be interpreted through a partisan lens, arguing that the provision of emergency healthcare transcends political affiliation.

     

    According to him, it is not only appropriate but necessary for members of the governing party to speak firmly when essential services required by their constituents are lacking.

     

    “The provision of an ambulance must never be reduced to a matter of political affiliation. An ambulance does not belong to the NDC, the NPP or any other political organisation. It belongs to the people and exists to preserve human life,” he stated.

     

    He said the fact that he is a member of the NDC Communications Team does not prevent him from demanding action from an NDC government when the welfare of his constituents is at stake.

     

    Akatsi South’s support for Mahama and NDC

     

    Hon. Gbede further drew attention to the electoral support Akatsi South gave President Mahama and the NDC in the 2024 general election, arguing that the municipality’s overwhelming support should reinforce the urgency with which the President must respond to the situation.

     

    He said Akatsi South has historically demonstrated strong electoral support for the NDC and President John Dramani Mahama, including recording one of the highest percentage votes for the President and the NDC in the constituency’s electoral history.

     

    According to him, that support is not being raised as a political entitlement but as evidence of the strong relationship between the people of Akatsi South and the government they elected.

     

    “The people of Akatsi South have demonstrated their confidence in President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC. It is therefore only appropriate that the President personally intervenes to ensure that this long standing challenge is resolved,” he argued.

     

    He stressed that government must not wait for another avoidable tragedy before acting.

     

    “Our people are dying every day”

     

    The Assembly Member warned that the absence of an ambulance has placed residents at unnecessary risk, particularly patients requiring urgent transfer to higher medical institutions.

     

    He noted that emergency cases involving severe trauma, stroke, complications arising from childbirth, respiratory distress, serious injuries and cardiac complications require immediate transportation, warning that delays can have fatal consequences.

     

    “Our people are dying every day,” Hon. Gbede said, insisting that the matter must no longer be treated as an ordinary administrative issue.

     

    He said families are sometimes forced to scramble for taxis, motorbikes, private vehicles and other alternatives during emergencies, when every passing minute can determine whether a patient survives.

     

    According to him, the situation has persisted for nearly seven years despite repeated appeals, making it difficult to justify continued inaction.

     

     

     

    The outspoken communicator has therefore called on President Mahama to personally intervene and direct the immediate provision of a fully functional ambulance to Akatsi South Municipality.

     

    He said the government has a responsibility to ensure equitable access to essential emergency healthcare services across the country and must not allow Akatsi South to remain disadvantaged.

     

    “The people of Akatsi South are citizens of Ghana, and their lives must carry the same value, dignity and urgency as every other Ghanaian life,” he stated.

     

    He added that the patience of the people must not be mistaken for acceptance, stressing that several petitions, appeals and interventions have already been made without resolving the problem.

     

    The petition concluded with a direct message to government: “I respectfully demand action, not another promise.”

    Hon. Gbede’s petition to President Mahama was copied to several key state officials and institutions, including the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, the Right Honourable Speaker of Parliament, the Right Honourable First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, the Chief of Staff at the Office of the President, the Council of State, the Minister for Health and the Volta Regional Minister.

    In a post shared on his official Facebook page, the outspoken NDC communicator argued that the demonstration is an attempt by the former governing party to alter political history, evade accountability, and generate synthetic public sympathy out of thin air.

     

    Reacting to the street protest, Gbede noted that after an eight-year tenure characterized by ruinous economic mismanagement, crushing hardship, staggering public debt, and the systematic erosion of public trust, the NPP cannot suddenly rebrand itself as a vanguard of democratic values.

     

    “The NPP cannot opportunistically weaponize the noble rhetoric of democracy as a political fortress whenever legitimate institutional scrutiny approaches,” Gbede wrote. “True democracy guarantees the rule of law, not political immunity; it ensures equality before the law, not aristocratic privilege for partisan elites.”

     

    He further asserted that for nearly a decade, Ghanaians decried rampant illegal mining, widespread environmental degradation, reckless fiscal indiscipline, and allegations of corruption, but those pleas were met with indifference.

    Under the ruling party’s internal electoral regulations and constitutional provisions, ministers of state, chief executive officers of state institutions, municipal and district chief executives (MMDCEs), and political appointees seeking party office were required to resign their administrative posts six months prior to the opening of nominations.

    With the deadline now elapsed, any government official who failed to step down from office is automatically disqualified from filing nominations for national, regional, or constituency executive roles.

    Party leadership established the strict timeframe to prevent potential conflicts of interest, prevent the misuse of public office and state resources during internal campaigning, and ensure that public governance remains uninterrupted.

    Highlighting the enforcing mechanism behind the regulation, senior party officials reiterated that the rule will be strictly applied during the upcoming vetting process.

    “The party guidelines are unambiguous on this matter,” a senior NDC official stated. “The requirement to resign six months in advance was instituted to safeguard internal equity and prevent administrative paralysis. Anyone who did not formally relinquish their government post before the deadline passed cannot participate in the contest.”

     

    The expiration of the window leaves several high-profile appointees who had quietly expressed interest in key national positions including National Chairman, General Secretary, and National Organizer with no choice but to remain in their executive government posts.

    Political analysts note that the strict enforcement of the rule levels the playing field for non-appointee candidates while maintaining stability in public administration.

    “Allowing sitting ministers and CEOs to campaign while holding onto executive power creates an uneven playing field for grassroots aspirants,” noted political analyst Kwame Mensah. “By strictly enforcing the six-month cutoff, the NDC forces political actors to choose between serving in public administration or steering the party machine.”

    First and foremost, my deepest gratitude goes to Almighty God, who lifted me from obscurity and set my feet on higher ground. He held my hand, guided my steps, kept me from falling, and directed my thoughts so that I would remain on the right path.

     

    He covered my shortcomings, transformed my weaknesses into strengths, and enabled me to serve with humility, passion, and conviction.

     

    I have served with respect, love, and discipline.

    I have served with pride, honour, and dignity.

     

    The God who has brought us this far neither sleeps nor slumbers. His promises are Yes and Amen. I do not know what He has promised you, but I know what He has promised me to take me a step further and a step higher.     Hon. Augustus “Goosie” Obuadum Tanoh has dismissed reports linking him to a possible bid for the National Chairmanship of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), describing calls for him to contest as inconsistent with his intentions.

    In a statement issued by a group calling itself the Concerned Supporters of Hon. Augustus “Goosie” Obuadum Tanoh, the supporters said a campaign circulating in the media and across social media platforms does not have Mr. Tanoh’s backing.

     

    “Our attention has been drawn to a statement circulating in the media and on social media purporting to represent a coalition of NDC grassroots members calling on Hon. Augustus “Goosie” Obuadum Tanoh to contest for the position of National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).”

    The statement urged party members and the public to disregard the reports, alleging that the campaign is being driven by persons with undisclosed motives.

    “We wish to state, in the strongest possible terms, that this call does not reflect the position, aspirations, or intentions of Hon. Goosie Tanoh. We believe this campaign is being orchestrated by interests known to us for reasons best known to them. We therefore urge party members and the general public to treat such publications with the caution they deserve.”

    According to the supporters, Mr. Tanoh has no interest in contesting for the party’s highest executive position and remains focused on his responsibilities as head of the 24-Hour Economy Authority.

    “For the avoidance of doubt, Hon. Augustus “Goosie” Obuadum Tanoh has no intention whatsoever of contesting for the National Chairmanship of the NDC. His current focus is on the enormous responsibility entrusted to him in ensuring the successful implementation of the Government’s 24-Hour Economy agenda through the 24-Hour Economy Authority. This national assignment requires his full attention, commitment, and expertise.”

    They maintained that his priority is the successful implementation of the government’s flagship 24-Hour Economy programme, which is expected to drive employment, boost productivity and accelerate industrialisation.

    “At this crucial stage of Ghana’s economic transformation, Hon. Goosie Tanoh remains fully dedicated to delivering on the mandate of the Authority to create sustainable jobs, promote productivity, stimulate industrial growth, and contribute meaningfully to national development. His priority is to ensure that the vision of the 24-Hour Economy becomes a practical reality for the benefit of all Ghanaians.”

    The statement also appealed to the Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, to facilitate the release of funds allocated to the Authority, arguing that the resources are needed to support its operations.

    “We also wish to take this opportunity to respectfully appeal to the Minister for Finance, Hon. Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, to facilitate the release of the budgetary allocation of GH¢1.4 million earmarked for the operational activities of the 24-Hour Economy Authority. The timely release of these funds will enable the Authority to function effectively and efficiently in executing this important national mandate.”

    The supporters further called on members of the NDC to concentrate on promoting party cohesion and supporting the government’s development agenda rather than speculating about individuals who have not declared any intention to seek party office.

    Reaffirming Mr. Tanoh’s commitment to his current role, the statement concluded:
