The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has reinforced its strategic oversight of the nation’s gold purchase and reserve management program through the formal designation of Second Deputy Governor Matilda Asante-Asiedu as its official representative on the Board of Directors of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod).
The move, authorized by BoG Governor Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, streamlines institutional representation while cementing seamless alignment between the central bank’s monetary policy objectives and GoldBod’s national mandate.
Addressing public speculation surrounding the board structure, central bank officials and GoldBod executive leadership clarified that the transition reflects standard corporate governance protocols aimed at delegating operational oversight to executive deputies while preserving high-level institutional integration.
Speaking on the appointment and his departure from personal board service, Dr. Asiama emphasized that the restructuring was part of a planned administrative realignment.
“I resigned from the board of GoldBod five months ago,” Dr. Asiama explained. “The appointment of Second Deputy Governor Matilda Asante-Asiedu ensures that the central bank maintains strong, high-level representation on the board to support GoldBod’s vital mandate in national reserve management and gold trading.”
GoldBod management firmly dispelled rumors alleging institutional friction, pointing out that the central bank’s active presence on its governing board continues without interruption.
“There is no rift whatsoever between GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana,” a senior GoldBod representative stated. “Our collaboration with the central bank remains robust as we execute key programs to stabilize local currency reserves, deepen foreign exchange buffers, and enhance domestic gold supply chains. The arrival of Second Deputy Governor Asante-Asiedu brings valuable executive experience to our board and further solidifies this partnership.”
The inclusion of Matilda Asante-Asiedu brings extensive governance, financial services, and administrative experience to GoldBod’s leadership team. As Ghana continues to expand its domestic gold purchase programs to support foreign exchange stability and macroeconomic resilience, industry experts view the central bank’s institutional appointment as a crucial step toward sustained regulatory coordination and market confidence.
