Emerging digital payment channels and foreign exchange stability took center stage on Monday as financial sector regulators, tech leaders, and international investors gathered in the capital to discuss the future of West African commerce.

Addressing delegates at the African Virtual Assets Summit (AVAS) 2026, Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Johnson Asiama laid out a twin strategy: accelerating financial technology adoption while maintaining macroeconomic discipline ahead of the high-demand December period.

“Regulation should not stifle innovation, but rather create the confidence necessary for responsible businesses and investors to operate,” Dr. Asiama stated, outlining upcoming central bank directives designed to integrate digital assets and stablecoins into the formal economy.

The regulatory push coincides with massive growth across local electronic payment channels, where transaction values have reached record highs. To ensure this expanding digital landscape does not threaten financial stability, the Bank of Ghana is establishing clear operational boundaries for fintech providers and institutional investors.

“Our collective task is not simply to build a digital asset market,” Dr. Asiama noted during his keynote address. “It is to build an ecosystem that is safe enough to be trusted, inclusive enough to serve our people, and innovative enough to support Africa’s future.”

Turning to consumer sentiment and trade conditions, the central bank chief reassured the business community that the local currency remains well-positioned to handle seasonal commercial pressures, promising stability for importers and shoppers alike.

“What I can promise is a good Christmas as far as the exchange rate is concerned. We will have a good Christmas,” Dr. Asiama assured the audience.

The dual focus on currency management and modern fintech frameworks signals Ghana’s ambition to position itself as a secure hub for financial innovation across the continent.
