West African sub-regional integration moved a step closer to fruition this week as Ghana’s Chief of Staff, Hon. Dr. Julius Debrah, led a delegation to Nigeria for high-level bilateral talks.

The visit is aimed at accelerating economic trade, regional security, and cross-border commerce.

The diplomatic mission was met with full state honors and a warm reception from senior Nigerian state officials, highlighting the long-standing political and cultural bond shared between West Africa’s two largest economies.

Unlocking Bilateral Trade and AfCFTA

Central to the discussions in Abuja is the practical implementation of trade initiatives under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), alongside strategies to streamline cross-border movement for entrepreneurs and goods between the two countries.

Speaking at the diplomatic reception, Dr. Julius Debrah underscored the necessity for West African economies to present a unified front to achieve sustainable economic stability.

“The prosperity of West Africa relies heavily on the synergy between Ghana and Nigeria. Our goal on this mission is to eliminate barriers to trade, foster sustainable economic growth, and ensure our shared vision for regional stability translates into actionable benefits for our citizens,” Dr. Debrah affirmed.

Strengthening Regional Security and Stability

Beyond trade, delegates from both nations addressed common security concerns across the sub-region, advocating for shared intelligence frameworks and joint capacity-building programs to safeguard maritime borders and inland trade routes.

Welcoming the Ghanaian envoy, a representative of the Nigerian diplomatic host team re-affirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strategic cooperation with Accra.

“Our partnership with Ghana remains a cornerstone of sub-regional stability. Hosting Dr. Debrah and his team provides a vital opportunity to align our policies on economic resilience, cross-border security, and mutual growth for both our nations,” the Nigerian diplomatic spokesperson stated.

Aligning on the “Reset Agenda”

The visit also serves as an avenue for the Ghanaian delegation to articulate key aspects of former President John Dramani Mahama’s “Reset Agenda” to key diplomatic stakeholders across Africa.

A senior member of the Ghanaian delegation emphasized the foreign policy vision driving the high-level engagement:

“Our foreign diplomacy under the Reset Agenda focuses on proactive leadership and strategic alliances. By deepening our partnership with Nigeria, we are taking tangible steps toward building an interconnected, prosperous, and secure West Africa.”

The delegation is slated to hold further closed-door working sessions with Nigerian trade ministers and business leaders over the coming days to finalize key bilateral framework agreements.
