Wild jubilation, resonant drumbeats, and tears of joy flooded the streets of Kumasi on Monday, July 6, 2026, following the historic announcement that His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has chosen Nana Ama Bonsu to ascend the sacred stool as the 15th Asantehemaa (Queen Mother) of the Asante Kingdom.
The momentous declaration at the Manhyia Palace Dwabrem grounds brings to an end months of anxious anticipation, officially signaling a vibrant new chapter of traditional leadership and cultural continuity across Asanteman.
A Spectacular Display of Customary Splendor
The Manhyia Palace was a sea of black and red traditional attire as chiefs, queen mothers, and thousands of well-wishers converged to witness the formal unveiling.
Amidst the resonant rhythms of traditional drumming, the blowing of fontomfrom horns, and victory songs, Nana Ama Bonsu made a ceremonial procession to the Asantehemaa’s Palace.
In strict compliance with age-old customary rites, traditional attendants sprinkled white powder on the new Queen Mother along the procession path, signifying purification, divine blessing, and absolute acceptance by the ancestral stools.
With this selection, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II cements a unique legacy as the first occupant of the Golden Stool to reign alongside three successive Queen Mothers first his biological mother (Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II), then his eldest sister (Nana Konadu Yiadom III), and now Nana Ama Bonsu.
The Power and Duties of the Asantehemaa
The office of the Asantehemaa, which dates back to the establishment of the empire in 1695, is widely regarded as one of the most powerful and influential traditional institutions in Africa. Far from being a symbolic title, the Asantehemaa is the co-ruler of the kingdom and the ultimate custodian of the royal matrilineal lineage.
The critical duties awaiting Nana Ama Bonsu include:
● Succession Arbiter: Holding the sole customary power to nominate a successor to the Golden Stool whenever an Asantehene passes away.
● Judicial and Family Advisor: Ruling on delicate domestic, marital, and chieftaincy disputes brought before her traditional court.
● Socio-Cultural Champion: Serving as a primary advocate for the welfare, health, and economic empowerment of women and children across Asanteman.
“The outdooring of Nana Ama Bonsu is a proud continuation of our sacred heritage,” an elder of the royal family remarked. “She steps into this role with a profound understanding of our customs, character, and community leadership.”
A Legacy of Transition and New Horizons
The new Queen Mother succeeds the widely respected Nana Konadu Yiadom III, who was enstooled in February 2017 and reigned for eight years before joining her ancestors. The late leader was fondly remembered during the ceremony for her quiet dignity and unwavering devotion to cultural preservation.
As the white powder settled over Kumasi, the streets outside the palace remained alive with singing and dancing. For the people of the Asante Kingdom, the arrival of Nana Ama Bonsu signifies stability, continuity, and a bright new chapter under the guidance of the Golden Stool.
