Legal practitioner Jonathan Alua has publicly commended the Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Mr. Anthony Sarpong, following a high-profile meeting regarding the pending public interest litigation case, Alua v. Attorney-General & Commissioner-General of the GRA.
In a social media update shared ahead of filing his statement of case, Alua praised the head of the tax authority for his professional approach and willingness to engage on critical revenue administration issues.
”Yesterday I had an amazing conversation with Mr. Anthony Sarpong, Commissioner-General of the GRA. I found that conversation very warm and progressive,” Alua shared. “In truth, I came away from that chat with an affirmation of how I have always perceived him, a progressive gentleman about his business in a way that would most certainly advance the fortunes of the GRA.”
Addressing potential concerns regarding retaliation or pressure, Alua noted that the meeting reinforced his confidence in the leadership of the revenue body while maintaining the independent footing of his lawsuit.
”I have also received utmost assurance from the CG that my law firm will not be victimized as a result of the public interest litigation that I have initiated,” Alua stated. “This is a gentleman who understood, and quite thoroughly too, the issues in contention and the need for reform. I must emphatically state that the CG did not in any way attempt to dissuade me from pursuing this matter.”
Alua also dismissed attempts by political commentators to assign partisan motives to the suit, reiterating that the legal action is purely grounded in public interest and policy reform.
”Again, and for the last time: this is not a political suit,” he added, confirming that his legal team is filing their statement of case today to proceed with the legal process.
GRA officials noted that engaging in constructive dialogue with legal practitioners and stakeholders remains a key part of the Authority’s open-door approach to revenue administration and public transparency.
