Enhanced surveillance protocols and proactive preventive security measures introduced by the leadership of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) have yielded significant results following the interception of an illicit cache of firearms and live ammunition at the Tema Port.
The seized weapons, which included an assault rifle, two pistols, and 610 rounds of live ammunition, were cleverly concealed inside a shipment declared falsely as harmless “personal effects”.
The intelligence-led physical examination was triggered when vigilant Customs officers flagged suspicious discrepancies in the cargo manifest. Upon further inspection, officers uncovered the hidden armaments tucked within the consignment, preventing a potentially dangerous illegal shipment from entering the country.
Highlighting the success of recent security overhauls, a senior Customs official commended the operational leadership for strengthening intelligence sharing and physical verification standards across border points.
“This successful interception is a direct testament to the enhanced preventive security strategy implemented by our leadership,” the official stated. “By sharpening our risk profiling and equipping our officers with advanced intelligence tools, we are making it virtually impossible for smugglers to exploit our ports under the guise of shipping routine personal items.”
Security experts have praised the prompt response and vigilance of the port officials, noting that the smuggling of high-caliber arms poses a grave threat to national security if left unchecked.
Following the discovery, Customs officials promptly arrested the key suspect associated with the shipment and transferred custody to the Ghana Police Service for comprehensive criminal investigation and prosecution.
“The suspect has been formally handed over to the police, alongside all seized exhibits, to ensure full law enforcement collaboration,” a spokesperson for the security task force confirmed. “Our message to syndicates attempting to bring unauthorized arms into Ghana is simple: our preventive security apparatus is stronger than ever, and you will be caught.”
Police investigations remain ongoing to trace the origin of the weapons and identify any potential accomplices linked to the illegal operation.
