…A new dawn for grassroots sports development
In a major milestone for community development, prominent statesman Dr. Julius Debrah on Saturday officially commissioned a magnificent new AstroTurf facility in the Agona East District.
The ultra-modern arena, delivered through the collaborative vision and relentless drive of the Member of Parliament for the area, Hon. Maame Pokua Nhyiraba Obaatanpa Sawyerr, signals a new era of heavy investment in sports infrastructure aimed at unlocking the potential of local youth.
Addressing a jubilant gathering of traditional rulers, youth groups, sports enthusiasts, and community stakeholders, Dr. Debrah described the facility as far more than just a playing field.
“This AstroTurf is not merely synthetic grass and floodlights. It is a platform for possibility, a sanctuary for talent, and an incubator for the next generation of Ghanaian sporting excellence,” Dr. Debrah declared.
He emphasized that the project aligns with a broader vision to decentralize development and weaponize sports as an instrument of social mobility, discipline, and national cohesion.
“By equipping Agona East with world-class infrastructure, we are dismantling the barriers that have long confined talent to the margins. We are telling our youth: your dreams are valid, and your leadership stands with you,” he asserted.
Testimonies pour in for Dr. Julius Debrah’s sports vision
The event also served as a platform for various stakeholders to pay tribute to Dr. Debrah’s enduring passion for using sports as a tool for national development. Throughout his public service career, Dr. Debrah has consistently championed sports infrastructure as a means to curb youth unemployment and foster community growth.
Speaking at the ceremony, Nana Kwesi Gyan II, a local traditional leader, lauded Dr. Debrah’s consistency.
”Dr. Julius Debrah’s interest in promoting sports is not a recent development or for political gimmickry. We have followed his public service journey, and wherever he goes, he builds people and builds sports. He understands that a healthy youth makes a wealthy nation,” the chief remarked.
A youth leader and local football coach, Emmanuel “Acheampong” Mensah, also shared an emotional testimony about Dr. Debrah’s impact.
”For years, some of us only heard about Dr. Debrah’s quiet sponsorship of local gala matches and his efforts in pushing for recreational centers when he served in various state capacities. Today, seeing him stand here to commission this pitch proves his heart is truly with the youth. He has given our boys a real chance to escape the streets and chase greatness,” Mensah said.
Praise for local leadership
Commending Hon. Maame Pokua Nhyiraba Obaatanpa Sawyerr for her “relentless advocacy and executive competence,” Dr. Debrah hailed the MP’s leadership as emblematic of results-driven governance.
“Under Hon. Sawyerr’s watch, Agona East is moving from potential to prominence. This facility is a testament to what is achievable when local leadership is bold, focused, and people-centered,” he stated.
The state-of-the-art pitch is expected to revolutionize sports development in the district by providing a standardized venue for talent scouting and community engagement.
Dignitaries at the event, including development partners, lauded the commissioning as a “covenant with the youth.” With the Agona East AstroTurf now operational, local authorities have reaffirmed an uncompromising resolve: to build facilities that inspire, empower, and endure—ensuring that every Ghanaian child has a field on which to chase their dreams.
