Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) leadership concluded a high-level strategic engagement in London this week with international cocoa trading and processing giants, laying the groundwork for the upcoming 2026/27 cocoa season.

The meeting, convened by the Ghana Cocoa Marketing Company (UK) Ltd. (GCMC UK), brought COCOBOD Chief Executive Dr. Ransford Abbey and Deputy Chief Executive in charge of Finance & Administration Mr. Ato Boateng face-to-face with long-standing commercial partners. Discussions centered on sweeping structural reforms, key legislative updates, and new financial mechanisms designed to modernize Ghana’s cocoa market.

At the top of the agenda was the newly enacted Ghana Cocoa Board Act, 2026 (Act 1182), alongside COCOBOD’s proposed cocoa sector financing framework. The delegation outlined a multifaceted financial strategy, including a commercial paper and bond financing program, to boost liquidity, stabilize supply chains, and encourage private-sector financing for Licensed Buying Companies (LBCs).

Speaking at the forum, Dr. Ransford Abbey emphasized the necessity of open dialogue as Ghana pivots toward a more resilient sector model.

”Our goal is not simply to navigate the upcoming season, but to fundamentally strengthen the sustainability, efficiency, and global competitiveness of Ghana’s cocoa,” Dr. Abbey stated. “The passage of Act 1182 marks a pivotal chapter. As we transition to this new financing framework, transparency and continuous collaboration with our international partners remain paramount.”

The engagement also tackled global market compliance, focusing heavily on Ghana’s readiness for the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). Industry representatives welcomed the updates, describing the discussions as constructive and crucial for maintaining supply stability.

Mr. Ato Boateng highlighted the financial mechanics underpinning the 2026/27 season, reassuring trading partners of robust risk management and liquidity structures.

”We are building a robust financial framework that leverages both traditional partnerships and innovative market instruments,” Mr. Boateng noted. “By expanding our funding mechanisms through commercial paper and targeted bond programs, alongside stronger private-sector backing for LBCs, we are establishing a liquidity environment that protects both our farmers and our international buyers.”

International traders praised COCOBOD’s proactive approach, noting that early engagement offers critical predictability in a volatile global market.

COCOBOD reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining active communication channels as practical implementation details of the new financing framework continue to evolve ahead of the season’s official launch.
