The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has announced plans to roll out an upgraded family of cedi banknotes, officially named the Heritage Series, on November 3, 2026.
The new currency notes will feature advanced security technologies, enhanced physical durability, and updated aesthetic designs that celebrate the nation’s history and identity.
Speaking on Thursday at the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) press briefing at the Bank Square in Accra, Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama explained that updating the banknotes became necessary due to technological advancements and evolving international standards in currency security.
”The upgraded banknotes incorporate enhanced security features, improved durability, and modern designs that reflect Ghana’s heritage and Ghana’s aspirations,” Dr. Asiama stated. He noted that existing banknote designs have been in circulation for over two decades, making an upgrade essential to safeguard the currency against counterfeiting.
Dual Circulation and Reassurance to the Public
The central bank reassured the general public that the launch of the Heritage Series does not invalidate existing banknotes. The new notes will circulate side by side with current notes, which remain full legal tender for all transactions.
Addressing potential anxiety among consumers and businesses, Dr. Asiama urged citizens to refrain from panic or unnecessary panic withdrawals.
”There is no need for the public to rush to exchange or to withdraw existing notes solely because of the introduction of the new Heritage Series,” the Governor emphasized.
Preserving Banknote Quality
Under the theme “The Cedi: Our Future, Secure, Designed to Last,” the central bank highlighted that the new notes are engineered to better withstand harsh handling and daily wear, thereby cutting long-term replacement costs for the nation.
However, Dr. Asiama cautioned the public, traders, and commercial financial institutions against damaging practices that shorten the lifespan of physical cash, including stapling, writing, crumpling, and using notes for money bouquets or spraying at social events.
”Proper handling will help preserve the quality of our banknotes. It will reduce replacement costs for the central bank and it will support efficient currency management,” Dr. Asiama stated, stressing that maintaining currency integrity requires public cooperation.
The official launch event for the Heritage Series will take place on November 3, 2026, at the Bank of Ghana premises in Accra.
