NPA boosts ‘MahamaCares’ with GH¢1.0 Million donation for chronic disease support

    By Adnan Adams Mohammed

In a major boost to national healthcare efforts, the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has donated GH¢1 million to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as MahamaCares. The contribution is earmarked to provide a lifeline for Ghanaians battling chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

The donation aligns with the Authority’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy and supports President John Dramani Mahama’s vision of ensuring that financial constraints do not prevent citizens from accessing life-saving medical care.

    A Commitment to Healthcare Equity

At a brief handover ceremony, NPA Chief Executive Officer Godwin Edudzi Tameklo confirmed that the Authority’s Board had fast-tracked approval for the funds to address the growing burden of NCDs in the country.

”We have decided to also support. The Board has given approval for an amount of GH¢1 million,” Mr. Tameklo stated.

Beyond the financial contribution, the CEO advocated for geographical equity in healthcare delivery. He specifically appealed to the Trust Fund’s leadership to expand interventions in Northern Ghana, citing grave concerns regarding the limited access to dialysis services for renal patients in the region.

    Expanding the Reach of ‘MahamaCares’

Receiving the donation, the Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, Obuobia Darko-Opoku, expressed profound gratitude, noting that the funds would significantly enhance the program’s operational capacity.

The MahamaCares initiative is designed to subsidize or fully cover the costs of treating:

    Cancers (Oncology services)

    Cardiovascular diseases

    Kidney failures (Dialysis)

    Other chronic non-communicable conditions

    Looking Ahead: Nationwide Rollout

The timing of the donation is critical. The Trust Fund is currently finalizing plans to scale its operations significantly. Starting this April, the MahamaCares program is set to roll out comprehensive services across 30 medical facilities nationwide, ensuring that specialized care moves closer to the communities that need it most.

With NCDs becoming a leading cause of mortality in Ghana, this GH¢1 million injection by the NPA represents a vital step toward a more sustainable and inclusive national health safety net.

2026 In Focus: NPA CEO pledges “Efficiency and Innovation” as Authority charts new course

    By Adnan Adams Mohammed

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Mr. Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, has reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to a “reset agenda” aimed at transforming Ghana’s downstream petroleum sector through enhanced regulatory oversight and consumer-focused innovations.

Speaking at the 77th Annual New Year School and Conference at the University of Ghana earlier this month, Mr. Tameklo outlined a strategic vision for 2026 that prioritizes quality compliance, safety, and fuel transportation monitoring.

Since his appointment in January 2025 by President John Dramani Mahama, the legal professional and energy expert has led a series of reforms designed to stabilize the industry and protect the welfare of Ghanaians.

    A Year of Strategic Growth

Reflecting on his first year in office during an Executive Committee (EXCO) retreat last week, the CEO described 2025 as a year of “foundation building.” Under his leadership, the NPA has successfully:

Strengthened Local Content: Intensified enforcement to ensure Ghanaian businesses secure a significant share of the petroleum value chain.

Infrastructural Expansion: Oversaw the development of a new 6,000 metric ton (MT) liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) storage facility, expected to be commissioned by the end of Q1 2026.

Driver Welfare: Announced the implementation of a Driver Remuneration Formula to address longstanding wage concerns for tanker drivers, aiming to improve safety and logistics.

“Together, we have strengthened the Authority’s regulatory mandate and laid firm foundations for sustainable growth,” Mr. Tameklo stated. “With unity of purpose, 2026 presents renewed opportunities to deepen efficiency across the distribution chain.”

    Addressing Market Challenges

The NPA’s leadership comes at a time of active debate within the sector. Recently, the Authority has been firm in its defense of the fuel price floor policy, countering claims from oil marketing firms like Star Oil regarding pricing restrictions. Mr. Tameklo’s administration has emphasized that these floors are essential to preventing predatory pricing and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the market.

Additionally, the CEO has become a vocal advocate for the revitalization of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR). He argues that boosting domestic refining capacity is a strategic necessity to ease pressure on the cedi and secure national energy independence.

    The Road Ahead

As the NPA moves into the second month of 2026, the focus remains on the 24-hour economy initiative. Mr. Tameklo has established a dedicated Steering Committee to ensure the downstream petroleum sector can support this national vision, ensuring fuel availability and regulatory support for businesses operating around the clock.

“Our goal is simple,” the CEO remarked during a recent courtesy call from the Oti Regional House of Chiefs. “We are here to serve the nation with integrity and ensure that every Ghanaian has access to affordable, high-quality energy.”

NPA remains resolute on transformative agenda …as CEO Outlines 2026 Focus in New Year Message

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) is set to build on its gains in 2026, with CEO Godwin Kudzo Tameklo outlining the organization’s focus areas for the year.

In his new year message, Tameklo emphasized the NPA’s commitment to the growth and development in Ghana’s petroleum downstream industry.

While specific details of the focus areas were not provided, the NPA has previously highlighted its efforts to improve regulatory processes, enhance consumer protection, and promote innovation in the sector.

In 2025, the NPA acquired ISO certification for key areas of its regulatory mandate and introduced technological innovations to improve service delivery.7

The NPA’s goals for 2026 align with President John Dramani Mahama’s vision for the country, which includes7 accelerating reforms in education, health, agriculture, energy, and housing.

The President has also emphasized the importance of fighting corruption and promoting national unity.

Godwin Edudze Tamakloe, CEO of NPA, who led the delegation expressed gratitude for the Muslim community’s support and cooperation over the years.

During the visit, Mr. Tamakloe highlighted the NPA’s appreciation for the National Chief Imam and the Muslim community’s contributions to the authority’s achievements. He emphasized the importance of maintaining peaceful coexistence and mutual respect among employees from diverse backgrounds.

“We are here to offer our sincere gratitude to the National Chief Imam and the entire Muslim community for the harmony we enjoy in the Authority, both in our offices and in all our operations,” Mr. Tamakloe said.

The CEO noted that the NPA has made efforts to accommodate Muslim employees, including allowing them to observe Ramadan without hindrance. He emphasized the importance of creating a supportive environment where everyone feels valued and respected.

NPA boss welcomes Sierra Leone petroleum delegation on study visit

The Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Mr Godwin Kudzo Tameklo, has welcomed a delegation from the Sierra Leone National Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NPRA) on a study visit to the Authority.

The visit forms part of efforts to strengthen collaboration and knowledge-sharing between the two countries.

According to the NPA, the delegation is in Ghana to understudy the country’s petroleum downstream sector, particularly in areas such as policy administration, regulatory framework, and technical advancements.

Ghana’s NPA has long been recognised as a model institution in the sub-region, with its systems and reforms often serving as a reference point for other African regulators.

The two-member Sierra Leonean delegation includes Wuyah Deen Sucarray, Director of Policy Planning and Coordination at NPRA, and Ms Aminata Margaret Kora, Assistant Manager, Human Resources and Administration.

During the visit, the team is expected to engage with key NPA departments and exchange ideas on best practices.

Mr Tameklo reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to regional cooperation, noting that such visits strengthen partnerships and promote standardisation in the petroleum sector across West Africa.

He expressed optimism that the engagement would contribute to enhancing Sierra Leone’s regulatory framework while deepening ties between the two agencies.

NPA partners security agencies for safe 24-hour fuel stations.

    Adnan Adams Mohammed

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) is seeking collaboration with various security agencies to ensure the safety of consumers and personnel at fuel stations across the country as they prepare to commence 24-hour operations.

The NPA has emphasized the importance of strict regulation and enforcement to protect the petroleum downstream industry from criminal activities.

The industry is highly susceptible to criminal activities, including fuel smuggling, illegal siphoning, and fraudulent transactions.

“We will need the active involvement of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), alongside the NPA’s intelligence unit and other security agencies like the Police, Customs, and Fire Service, to combat all forms of fuel-related crimes,” the Chief Executive of NPA, Godwin Edudzi Tameklo

Mr. Tameklo said at a special meeting with the Eastern Regional Minister, regional security heads, and key stakeholders at the Eastern Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) in Koforidua.

Meanwhile, he hinted at the NPA’s plans to provide specialized training for security agencies to enhance their capacity in tackling petroleum-related offenses.

Lawyer Tamaklo stressed that the government’s plan to roll out a 24-hour economy could only succeed if the security and safety of consumers and petroleum workers were assured.

“Petroleum is a hazardous product, and we cannot afford to overlook safety concerns. The NPA will work closely with the Fire Service and other security agencies to ensure the highest levels of safety and security,” he emphasized.

In a recent unfortunate incident, masked armed robbers attacked the Kansaworodo branch of the Total fuel station in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis of the Western Region at dawn.

Fortunately, the keys to the safe were with the manager, who was not on the premises at the time, so the robbers left empty-handed.

The Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, pledged the support of the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) and assured the NPA of her full cooperation in ensuring safety and regulatory compliance in the petroleum sector across the Eastern Region.

She also proposed integrating the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) into the NPA’s operations nationwide to strengthen security and improve collaboration.

Additionally, she commended the NPA’s commitment to consumer protection and regulatory enforcement.

Haruna is a ‘game changer in the north’ for NDC – Edudzi Tameklo extols

    Lawyer Edudzi Tamaklo writes…

Hon HARUNA Iddrisu and the politics of the North

Many years ago, on the University of Ghana campus, there was this very popular political program named, Legon Speaks.

It was hosted at Legon Hall of the University of Ghana.

My first encounter with the dynamite, Lawyer Haruna Iddrisu, MP for Tamale South. It was in the turbulent days of President Kuffour’s administration.

This young MP was all over the place opposing Mr Kuffour.

As a University student, it was a great delight watching him at the Legon Speaks against leading NPP politicians.

Then came my involvement in NDC national politics and my direct association with him.

Like every human leader, he had his own failings but overall, he was a good politician.

When NDC was in power from 2009 to 2013, I was basically in law school and doing my politics predominantly within the Dome Kwabenya constituency.

I didn’t get to interact with him more until in 2017, when the NDC went into opposition.

Hon Haruna Iddrisu eventually became the leader of the opposition NDC caucus in Parliament. My engagements with him started from that period till now.*

With admirable courage, he stabilized the front of the Minority Caucus and started subjecting the Akufo Addo administration to the fire of accountability and probity.

He fought Speaker Mike Ocquaye even with Minority MPs of 106.

In 2020, I had a call to represent some NDC interest in Northern region, precisely at the Zabzugu constituency during the voter registration exercise.

I had to do Accra-Tamale-Accra on a few occasions.

I was going to the High Court in Tamale to challenge some voter registration infractions.

In the course of doing this case, I was working closely with the Regional Secretary, Salam.

During this period, I encountered the real influence of the political colossus, Lawyer Aduna.

He had enormous influence in shaping the politics of the NDC up north.

I can without any equivocation detail how he single-handedly ensured that the NDC recovered the Savelugu seat.

His efforts in ensuring we came out of the 2020 election with 9 seats.

The NPP adopted the strategy of sending very resourceful CEOs and deputy ministers to some constituencies.

Even with their resources, Lawyer Aduna matched them boot for boot.*

Quite painful, we lost Gushegu and Karaga.

I recall after the 2020 election, the NPP filed election petitions in Krachi West, Savelugu, Jomoro, Assin North among others.

I was assigned the Jomoro and Krachi West petitions to defend.

At every point, he will call to find out the progress of work on those petitions.

Well, I successfully defended the two seats.

Meeting him at the program organized by JM at UPSA, he wanted to know my honest opinion on the Jomoro seat.

I assured him with the legal strategies deployed, we will retain the seat.

He was visibly excited at the prospect.

I am praying to Allah to calm him and for him to put everything behind him.

That he will continue to hold the North for H.E John Mahama.

So JM can get the time to focus on the other parts of the country. We need to prosecute multi pronged campaign.

Lawyer Aduna with the support of the regional and constituency executives, obtain maximum votes for President Mahama and more parliamentary seats for the NDC.

I am excited with the interventions from President John Mahama in this reshuffle impasse.

Lawyer Aduna is a game changer in the North.

With this said, we must rally around the leadership of Hon Cassiel Ato Forson to move the Minority Caucus to another level in our forward match to win the presidency in 2024.

We make peace with our enemies, not our friends.

We have one task ahead of us.

Rescue this beautiful country from the misleader, Mr Akufo Addo and his political experiment, Dr BAWUMIA.

    Long live NDC.
