The University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC) has appointed renowned entrepreneur and corporate leader, Dr. Ernest Ofori Sarpong, as its first Chancellor, effective August 1, 2026.
The appointment, approved by the University’s Governing Council at its meeting on May 26, 2026, in accordance with the UniMAC Statutes, marks a significant milestone in the history of the institution and is expected to strengthen collaboration between academia and industry.
Dr. Ofori Sarpong, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Special Group of Companies, becomes the inaugural Chancellor of the university established under Act 1059 of 2020 through the merger of the former Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), Ghana Institute of Languages (GIL) and the National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI).
As Chancellor, he will serve as the ceremonial head of the university, preside over congregation ceremonies, confer degrees and academic honours, and act as the institution’s principal ambassador.
The university said his appointment reflects its commitment to strengthening partnerships with industry while promoting innovation, research and practical training in media, arts and communication.
Over the years, Dr. Ofori Sarpong has built a reputation as one of Ghana’s leading indigenous entrepreneurs, with investments in manufacturing, construction, finance, real estate and media through the Special Group of Companies.
Beyond business, he has contributed to education, youth empowerment and philanthropy through various initiatives aimed at supporting students and strengthening educational institutions.
He holds a Master’s degree in Finance and Investment Management from the University of Salford in the United Kingdom and is a Chartered Accountant. He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Business Administration degree in France.
Dr. Ofori Sarpong also chairs the Governing Council of Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC), serves as Chairman of the EMY Africa Awards, chairs the Advisory Board of the College of Health Sciences of the University of Ghana and leads the Advisory Board of the Millennium Excellence Foundation.
He has received several national and international honours in recognition of his contributions to entrepreneurship, corporate leadership and humanitarian service.
UniMAC has, since its establishment, expanded its academic programmes, strengthened its governance systems and increased investment in research and innovation, including the introduction of doctoral programmes in Media and Communication.
The university believes the appointment of its inaugural Chancellor will deepen collaboration with industry, attract strategic partnerships and enhance its position as a leading institution for media, arts and communication education in Africa.
Education analysts say the appointment reflects the increasing role of private sector leaders in supporting higher education and promoting innovation, entrepreneurship and graduate employability.
Dr. Ofori Sarpong’s appointment is expected to usher in a new phase of institutional growth as UniMAC seeks to strengthen its local and international reputation while producing graduates equipped to meet the demands of the creative and digital economy.
