  • Assemblymember applauds Regional Minister and Council of State member as driving force behind Volta’s unprecedented development

Assemblymember applauds Regional Minister and Council of State member as driving force behind Volta’s unprecedented development

The Assemblymember for Wuxor, Have, and Sremanu Electoral Area, Hon. Japhet Festus Gbede, has lavished praise on the Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, and the Council of State Member for the Volta Region, H.E. Gabriel Kwamigah Tanko Atokple, describing them as “relentless visionaries whose hunger for development knows no bounds.”

The young Assemblymember has also described the Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, and Council of State Member, H.E. Gabriel Kwamigah Tanko Atokple, as “sacrificial lamps whose combined energy is illuminating the path of transformation for the Volta Region.”

According to Hon. Gbede, Hon. Gunu’s ambitious Water for All project has brought lasting relief to many communities that for decades struggled with access to clean and safe drinking water. From the coastal districts to the hinterlands, boreholes and mechanised water systems are being commissioned, directly improving health, sanitation, and livelihoods.

He also commended H.E. Tanko Atokple for his strategic networking with foreign donors and investors to attract factories and industrial facilities to the Volta Region. According to him, these efforts are creating fertile ground for job creation, entrepreneurship, and long-term economic stability.

“From the bustling heart of Ho to the serene farming belts of North Dayi, from the tourism-rich Afadzato South to the fishing communities of Keta, the evidence of their work is visible and impactful. These are leaders who have chosen to be sacrificial lamps, burning themselves to give light to the path of progress in our region,” he stated.

Hon. Gbede emphasised that their combined energy, foresight, and commitment are ushering in an era the Volta Region has never experienced before. “History will remember this as the period when leadership rose above politics and personal comfort to serve every Volta citizen with integrity, passion, and vision,”.

“Sometimes I wonder if Hon. Gunu and H.E. Tanko even rest. They are everywhere donating to communities, supporting festivals, empowering the youth, and uniting the Volta NDC like never before. If these men are ever done, the NPP should prepare to go back to 1992, because no reasonable person in this region will wear their T-shirt again,he said.”

“The combined energy of these two leaders is not a political stunt, it is a mission and a movement. They are burning themselves to give light to every corner of this region,” Hon. Gbede declared.

  • Helicopter crash: Dr. Apaak mourns Omane Boamah, Muntala, six others, calls for probe

Helicopter crash: Dr. Apaak mourns Omane Boamah, Muntala, six others, calls for probe

Deputy Education Minister, Dr. Clement Apaak, has expressed deep sorrow over the helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, which claimed eight lives.

Dr. Apaak, who doubles as the Member of Parliament for Builsa, was in a very sad mood as he narrated his memories with some of the victims, including Dr. Omane Boamah, Dr. Muntala Mohammed, and Mr. Samuel Sarpong.

“Omane, bro, I called him, and he will respond, bro. Only a week ago, he sent me documents of a teacher who reached out to him on the delay in getting a staff ID. I promised to take it up with GES. He responded, grateful bro. Oh my bro.

“Multala, my troublesome younger brother, I called him. He will respond, my big brother. He would then proceed to announce to everyone in the vicinity that “do you know that Dr. Apaak is the President of the Global Association of Dog Meat Eaters.” Who will announce my most cherished title?

“Limuna, my playmate. He will usually call me, my slave [It’s a Gonja and Builsa thing]. He called me as he usually did a week ago to check up on me. He informed me that he would come to my office to discuss and introduce a representative of an international NGO interested in supporting education in Ghana. I told him I would give him a date. My master is gone.

“Dr. Samuel Sarpong, I called him Senior, and he will respond, Doc. We attended this year’s June 4th celebrations together. We were seated close to each other. He, Dr. Duffour, and I used our presence at the event to discuss some crucial issues and decided to formalise the ideas that came up. Senior, what happens to our ideas?”.

The deputy minister also called for a national tribute, a thorough investigation into the crash, and renewed efforts to fight illegal mining (galamsey) in their honor.

“We must never forget the dedicated service these gallant 8 gave to our nation. We owe them a duty to get to the bottom of what caused this painful national tragedy. Their sacrifice must spur us on to win the fight against galamsey.”

  • DStv Services Pricing: Sam George vow to proceed with August 7 action as planned

The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has reiterated his resolve to take regulatory action against MultiChoice Ghana, operators of DStv, over what he describes as unfair and exorbitant subscription fees.

His reaffirmation comes amid rising public dissatisfaction over DStv’s pricing model in Ghana — concerns that have prompted calls for intervention from various stakeholders, including the Minority in Parliament.

While the Minority has urged a diplomatic approach, encouraging engagement between the Ministry, MultiChoice Ghana, and the National Communications Authority (NCA), the Minister has insisted that the process of regulatory enforcement will proceed.

In a statement issued on Sunday, August 3, MultiChoice described the directive from the Minister instructing the NCA to suspend its broadcasting licence as “regrettable,” arguing that a further reduction in subscription fees was not feasible under current conditions.

Responding to this position, Sam George dismissed the company’s justification as out of touch with the economic hardships facing Ghanaians.

In a Facebook post on Monday, August 4, he acknowledged the Minority’s appeal for dialogue but insisted that regulatory measures would go ahead as scheduled.

“On the 7th of August, the Regulator would initiate action in line with the terms of the license authorisation and the Electronic Communications Act, Act 775. We would act within the law and in the interest of the Ghanaian people. The RESET agenda demands this action for sanity to prevail,” he wrote.

He further assured that the Ministry would provide a full update to the Parliamentary Committee overseeing the matter once regulatory steps have been completed.

“I remain accountable to the people of Ghana in my service as Minister. I can assure the Committee as a whole that the Ministry would provide a full update when we complete our regulatory actions on 7th August,” he added.

Describing the directive as a last resort, the Minister stressed that the aim is to curb monopolistic practices and ensure subscription fees reflect Ghana’s current economic realities.

Read below the statement by Sam George on Facebook

“I appreciate the call by the NPP Minority on the Communications Select Committee of Parliament for engagement. As Minister and an MP, I have the utmost respect for my oversight Committee.

I can assure the Committee as a whole that the Ministry would provide a full update when we complete our regulatory actions on 7th August.

For the records, let me state that I met the Ghanaian management of DStv on the 27th of June this year to raise my concerns with them. I subsequently wrote to invite their headquarters management and met them on 4th July. A meeting that was held on a holiday and at which I indicated our request of a 30% reduction and the need for DStv to deal with piracy which was being perpetrated on their platform to the detriment of Ghana. (Pictures of both meetings are attached. I have videos as well if needed).

I have always approached this matter with one goal, a fair price for the Ghanaian people. DStv responded with a 9-page letter on 21st July. (If the 1-page letter annoyed you, imagine what was in the 9-pager). The policy directive is a last resort action to protect the Ghanaian public from what appears to be a recalcitrant monopoly which has become tone deaf to the cries of their customers.

On the 7th of August, the Regulator would initiate action in line with the terms of the license authorisation and the Electronic Communications Act, Act 775.

We would act within the law and in the interest of the Ghanaian people. The RESET agenda demands this action for sanity to prevail. I remain accountable to the people of Ghana in my service as Minister.

  • Automobile Dealers Union assures of car price drop next year

The Automobile Dealers Union of Ghana (ADUG) has stated that significant reductions in vehicle prices may only be fully realised in 2026, despite expressing optimism about the current economic environment.

The union attributes its cautious outlook to the recent revision of the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) by the Bank of Ghana (BoG)—from 28% to 25%—as well as the strengthening of the Ghana cedi against the US dollar. These factors, it believes, have the potential to impact vehicle pricing in the near future.

In a press statement issued on July 31, the union described the MPR reduction as a “strategic decision” that will ease “the cost of borrowing and revitalising business confidence across the country.”

The statement also described the BoG’s move as a “signal of hope for the business community, particularly in the automotive retail and distribution value chain,” and further noted that it could serve as a “catalyst for inclusive economic growth, job creation, and mobility enhancement across the country.”

However, in an interview with Citi News, the Union’s President, Kwaku Boateng, clarified that any substantial drop in vehicle prices is not expected until 2026.

According to him, most dealers still hold stocks of vehicles imported at higher exchange rates and cannot afford to sell under current market conditions.

“I’m urging Ghanaians they be patient. About 90% of the vehicles we imported before the dollar appreciated,” he said.

Mr Boateng appealed to the public for understanding and called on the government to maintain and enhance the current economic stability to enable futurep rice reductions.

  • E-visa services: Mahama directs sector Ministers to fast track process

President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Ministers for Interior, Transport, and Foreign Affairs to collaborate and fast-track the rollout of e-visa services in Ghana.

The ministers have been tasked to leverage the newly commissioned Air Navigation Services (ANS) and the Multi-Agency Command Centre for the Advance Passenger Information (API) and Passenger Name Record (PNR) systems to see to their implementation.

Speaking at the commissioning of the facilities on Monday, August 4, President Mahama noted that the API and PNR systems will deal with passenger and travel document data.

“I’m directing the Hon. Ministers for Interior, Transport, and Foreign Affairs to collaborate to ensure that this platform is expanded to enable us to implement this long-awaited e-services for the country. I’m charging them to extend this system to cover both the sea and land border posts, integrate with our e-gate systems, and the adoption of capabilities to extend, to perform the advancement of the cargo information system and also for the benefit of our customs.

“These policy directives will ensure the country enjoys the full benefits of what we’re witnessing today. The e-visa system will ease visa application processes, reduce paperwork, bureaucracy, support tourism, and make Ghana an even more attractive travel destination for business. The future of travel is digital, and Ghana must not be left behind,” he said.
