Free Sanitary Pad: Haruna Iddrisu corrects price miscalculation by Old Tafo MP

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has clashed with Old Tafo MP Vincent Ekow Assafuah over the cost of sanitary pads under the government’s Free Sanitary Pad Distribution Programme.

Assafuah had accused the government of overspending, citing budget figures that suggested each pack costs around GH¢45, far above the market price of GH¢15-25.

However, Iddrisu dismissed Assafuah’s claims, stating that the government is actually procuring over 12 million sanitary pads, not 6.6 million as claimed. He accused Assafuah of doing “chop bar arithmetics” and presenting false information.

The government allocated GH¢292 million for the programme, aiming to support over 2 million schoolgirls in basic and senior high schools. The initiative aims to improve menstrual hygiene, reduce absenteeism and promote girls’ education.

The organization believes that the Attorney General’s stance could undermine the principles of equality and freedom of religion enshrined in Ghana’s constitution. MUYAD Social Services is urging the Attorney General to prioritize dialogue, inclusivity, and respect for diverse beliefs, ensuring that everyone can practice their faith freely without infringing on others’ rights.

“We believe that, as a democrat, you should be championing social cohesion where every individual has the right to freedom of religion and practice their faith without restriction or coercion,” the statement read.

The petition also highlighted the potential consequences of restricting religious practices, warning that it could lead to a polarized society.

MUYAD Social Services is calling for an out-of-court settlement and a swift retraction of the Attorney General’s stance, emphasizing the need to protect national interest and cohesion.

The petition has been copied to the Office of the President, the Chief Justice, the National Democratic Congress, the National Chief Imam, and the National Peace Council, among others.

100 Dual Desks Delivered to Transform Learning at Have Fiakpokorpe M/A Basic School

The Have Fiakpokorpe M/A Basic School in the Akatsi South Municipality has received a major boost following the delivery of 100 brand-new dual desks, a timely intervention that is expected to significantly improve the learning environment for pupils who previously studied under distressing conditions.

The initiative was championed by the Assemblymember for the Wuxor–Have–Sremanu Electoral Area, Hon. Japhet Festus Gbede, who hosted a consortium of NGOs led by Vision of Hope Alliance, a subsidiary of PayAngel.

The desks formed the centerpiece of a broader educational support exercise aimed at restoring dignity and comfort to schoolchildren.

The intervention was coordinated through the efforts of renowned development advocate Mr. Dickson Assan, with support from THX22 Foundation, Legacy Foundation, Aspire Foundation, NurtureUp Legacy Foundation, HR Certification Centre, and several other philanthropic partners.

Their collaboration ensured the smooth delivery of the 100 dual desks an asset residents described as “a long-awaited relief” for the school.

Beyond the desks, the team also supplied:

    500 reading books

    100+ pairs of shoes

    200+ pieces of clothing

    Confectionery and soft drinks

    40 packs of Verna water

Pupils further benefited from counselling and mentorship sessions facilitated by Seyram Amakpah-Azasu and Jennifer of PayAngel, inspiring many of the children to aim higher.

Hon. Gbede complemented the gesture with school uniforms for vulnerable pupils and assured residents that all donated resources would be “jealously protected and put to their intended use.” He praised Mr. Assan’s continued dedication, referencing his role in drilling a mechanized borehole and donating over 1,000 books and footwear to the community last year.

Looking ahead, Hon. Gbede revealed that he has appealed for further development support, including:

    A Health Center

    A KG Block

    An ICT Centre

A Starlink internet device to enhance digital access

He also called for investment in agro-processing facilities to address post-harvest losses confronting local garden egg farmers.

Mr. Assan expressed gratitude to the donors and commended Hon. Gbede for his unwavering leadership, describing him as “a dedicated leader who deeply understands the needs of his people.”

Residents hailed the event as historic, emphasizing that the arrival of the 100 dual desks marks a turning point that will directly improve teaching and learning outcomes.

The strengthened partnership between the Assemblymember and partner NGOs, they said, is bringing real, visible transformation to the community.

  • PRINPAG applauds government’s plan for National Media Fund, urges swift implementation

PRINPAG applauds government’s plan for National Media Fund, urges swift implementation

The Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) has expressed appreciation to the Government of Ghana for its proposal to establish a National Media Fund.

The Association described the initiative as timely, coming at a period when the media industry is facing escalating operational costs, dwindling advertising revenue, limited access to training opportunities, and sustainability challenges particularly among smaller and privately owned outlets.

PRINPAG noted that these constraints pose a threat to media independence, vibrancy, and long-term viability, making the establishment of the Fund essential.

The Association acknowledged President John Dramani Mahama for his longstanding commitment to media development, recalling that “he first introduced the concept of a national media support mechanism during his first term in office, although its objectives could not be fully realized before the conclusion of that administration in 2016.”

According to PRINPAG, the President’s renewed leadership and dedication to national progress give confidence that the vision he once championed for media advancement will now be realized. The Association stated it remains hopeful that this new effort to activate and implement the Media Development Fund will come to fruition.

While welcoming the proposal, PRINPAG urged government to expedite processes toward the establishment and operationalization of the Fund to ensure timely support for journalists and media institutions nationwide.

To guarantee transparency and independence, PRINPAG proposed that the Fund be anchored on strong governance structures, including a dedicated Secretariat, a Fund Administrator, and an Independent Board of competent and experienced individuals to ensure professional management.

The Association further called on media stakeholders, development partners, civil society organisations, the private sector, and the general public to support the initiative and rally behind efforts to strengthen Ghana’s media ecosystem. It stressed that a resilient and independent media is critical to deepening democracy, enhancing accountability, and advancing national development.

PRINPAG reaffirmed its commitment to working with government and all stakeholders to build a free, vibrant, and sustainable media environment in Ghana.

  • YEA under Basintale rolling out jobs for all Ghanaian youth – PRO Jawando

YEA under Basintale rolling out jobs for all Ghanaian youth – PRO Jawando

The Public Relations Officer of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Abdul-Wahab Jawando, says the agency is now truly serving the youth of Ghana under the leadership of CEO Malik Basintale and the NDC government.

Speaking on Ahotor 93.2 FM, Mr. Jawando explained that YEA has introduced a transparent online recruitment system (www.yea.gov.gh) to eliminate human interference and ensure fairness for all applicants. He noted that the new leadership is focused on expanding opportunities and creating sustainable jobs for young people.

He criticised the previous NPP administration under Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, saying it operated YEA with strong political influence. According to him, this is why “faceless NPP elements” are now attacking Malik Basintale, whom he described as “the youth president” because of his commitment and the rapid progress being made.

Mr. Jawando revealed that YEA has already deployed about 12,000 police assistants and 5,000 prison assistants, who graduated last week, to support national security agencies. He added that thousands of youth with little or no formal education are being enrolled in apprenticeship programmes in carpentry, masonry, electricals, welding, hairdressing and other trades. These trainees will receive monthly stipends and later be equipped with start-up kits and capital to establish their own businesses and train others.

He further highlighted the Community Medical First Response Module introduced by Basintale. Out of 6,000 recruits under this programme, the final batch of 2,000 will pass out next week after completing training with the Ghana Ambulance Service.

Mr. Jawando also noted that the Ghana National Fire Service has completed training for 5,000 YEA personnel, while a teaching assistant module is available for qualified applicants.

He stressed that all these achievements have been recorded within just 10 to 11 months of the John Dramani Mahama-led NDC administration, with beneficiary institutions fully involved in preparing recruits to meet professional standards.

According to the PRO, Abdul-Wahab Jawando, the minimum monthly allowance for YEA personnel starts from GH¢800.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Joint Press Release By: HELP Foundation Africa, Fisheries Alliance CSOs SDG 14 Platform, Nsemkafo Consult

    FOR WORLD FISHERIES DAY 2025

Theme : “Reviving Ghana’s Fisheries for a Sustainable Blue Economy and Thriving Coastal Communities”

    Date: 21st November 2025

     World Fisheries Day 2025

As the global community marks World Fisheries Day 2025, we join millions around the world in recognizing the critical role that fisheries play in food security, jobs, coastal livelihoods, and the sustainable blue economy. We have picked the theme “Reviving Ghana’s Fisheries for a Sustainable Blue Economy and Thriving Coastal Communities” . This calls attention to the urgent need for bold action to protect and restore Ghana’s marine resources.

     Ghana’s Fisheries at a Crossroads

Fisheries remain a lifeline for more than 3 million Ghanaians, including artisanal fishers, processors, traders, and coastal families. Yet the sector faces severe challenges that threaten both livelihoods and national food security.

    Key Challenges

    1. Declining Fish Stocks: Scientific assessments continue to show that small pelagic species, especially sardines, anchovies, and mackerel are on the brink of collapse due to overfishing and weak enforcement.

    2. Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing: Practices such as juvenile fish landings, light fishing, illegalities by industrial trawlers, use of illegal nets, etc. continue to deplete fish stocks and undermine fishing livelihoods.

    3. Weak Governance and Inconsistent Enforcement: Limited monitoring capacity, corruption risks, and inconsistent implementation of fisheries laws contribute to ineffective management.

    4. Climate Change Impacts: Rising temperatures, changing currents, and coastal erosion are shifting fish migration patterns and destroying landing sites.

    5. Socioeconomic Vulnerabilities: Coastal poverty, lack of alternative livelihoods, limited access to finance, and gender inequalities (especially among women fish processors) further deepen the crisis.

    6. Post-Harvest Losses and Poor Infrastructure: Inadequate cold chain systems, poor landing site facilities, sanitation deficits, and lack of modern smoking technologies lead to significant losses and health risks.

A Path Forward : Recommendations to Restore Ghana’s Fisheries and Strengthen the Blue Economy

    1. Enforce Fisheries Regulations Fairly and Consistently

Strengthen Monitoring, Control and Surveillance (MCS) with improved vessel tracking.

Implement stricter measures against all forms of IUU fishing, including juvenile fish landings.

Ensure that artisanal fishers are protected from industrial trawler encroachment.

    2. Implement Science-Based Fishery Management

Re-introduce closed seasons for all fishers including Artisanal fishers.

Limit fishing effort through licensing reforms and implement gear regulations for all fishers including Artisanal fishers.

Support and improve fisheries co-management structures that truly and practically empower local communities in decision-making.

    3. Modernize and Support Artisanal Fishing

Invest in safe, efficient, and eco-friendly fishing gear and boats.

Improve landing sites with cold storage, clean water, sanitation, and processing facilities.

Promote modernized and efficient smoking technologies.

    4. Accelerate Ghana’s Blue Economy Transformation

Diversify economic opportunities through eco-tourism, aquaculture, seaweed cultivation, and marine renewable energy.

Strengthen public–private partnerships to unlock sustainable financing for coastal development.

Promote circular economy models to reduce marine waste and pollution including plastic waste.

    5. Empower Women in Fisheries

Support women-led cooperatives and leadership in fisheries governance.

Improve safety, hygiene, and value addition in fish processing.

Expand access to microcredit, trade finance, and modern processing technologies for women.

    6. Address Climate and Environmental Threats

Protect marine habitats such as mangroves and estuaries through restoration programs.

Integrate climate adaptation strategies in national fishery policies.

Address the pollution and impacts of Illegal mining (Galamsey) on freshwater and marine Fisheries.

Invest in coastal resilience infrastructure to safeguard communities and landing sites.

    *A Call to National Action*

World Fisheries Day 2025 is a reminder that Ghana’s fisheries can recover, but only with collective action, strong political will, and responsible stewardship.

    We call on:

    1. Government to lead bold policy reforms and invest in sustainable blue economy pathways.

    2. Fisherfolk and community leaders to champion responsible fishing and protect marine ecosystems.

    3. Private sector and financial institutions to invest in modern technologies and blue economy initiatives.

    4. Development partners and NGOs to support capacity building, research, and community resilience.

    5. All Ghanaians value and protect the ocean as a national treasure.

    Conclusion

Let World Fisheries Day 2025 be the turning point where Ghana recommits to rebuilding its marine resources, transforming artisanal fisheries, and ensuring that coastal families can thrive with dignity.

A healthy ocean means a healthy nation.

Together, we can revive Ghana’s fisheries for generations to come.

Background : World Fisheries Day is celebrated annually on November 21st. Its purpose is to highlight the importance of fisheries and the communities that depend on them. The event aims to draw attention to overfishing, habitat destruction and other serious threats to the sustainability of our marine and freshwater resources. The day is observed globally by fishing communities.

The celebrations serve to focus on changing the way the world manages global fisheries to ensure sustainable stocks and healthy ecosystems.

    Accused Persons

Kenneth Ofori-Atta (A1) was the Minister of Finance at all material times in relation to him.

Ernest Darko Akore (A2) was the Chef de Cabinet of Kenneth Ofori-Atta (A1) in his capacity as the Minister of Finance at all material times in relation to him.

Emmanuel Kofi Nti (A3) was the Commissioner-General of Ghana Revenue Authority at all material times in relation to him.

Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah (A4) was the Commissioner-General of Ghana Revenue Authority at all material times in relation to him. Isaac Crentsil (A5) was the Commissioner of the Customs Division of Ghana Revenue Authority at all material times in relation to him.

Kwadwo Damoah (A6) was the Commissioner of the Customs Division of Ghana Revenue Authority at all material times in relation to him. Evans Adusei (A7) is the Chief Executive, beneficial owner, and controlling mind of SML (A8).

SML (A8) is a company registered in Ghana (formerly known as Strategic Mobilisation Enhancement Limited).

    Details of the case

The Accused Persons conspired to set up and did perform acts in furtherance of the conspiracy to set up a criminal enterprise of directly and indirectly influencing the procurement process to obtain unfair advantage for SML (A8) in the award of procurement contracts for transaction audit services, external price verification services, measurement audit of downstream petroleum products, upstream petroleum audit services, and minerals audit services purportedly by the Government of Ghana, acting through the Ministry of Finance and Ghana Revenue Authority.

The criminal enterprise was commenced in 2017 by Kenneth Ofori-Atta (A1), Emmanuel Kofi Nti (A3), Evans Adusei (A7), and SML (A8), with the other Accused Persons joining the adventure at various times. The criminal enterprise was characterised by no genuine need for contracting SML (A8) for the obligations it purported to perform, and the contracts were secured for SML (A8) through self-serving patronage, sponsorship, and promotion by the Kenneth Ofori-Atta (A1), Ernest Darko Akore (A2), Emmanuel Kofi Nti (A3), Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah (A4), Isaac Crentsil (A5), and Kwadwo Damoah (A6) based on false and unverified claims.

Also, the contracts were attended by the commission of egregious prohibited acts as mandatory statutory prior approvals by Parliament, and the Procurement Authority were wantonly disregarded by Kenneth Ofori-Atta (A1), Emmanuel Kofi Nti (A3), Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah (A4), Isaac Crentsil (A5), and Kwadwo Damoah (A6) who acted with increased emboldened impunity as they freely abused their public offices by using the offices for private benefit.

Further, Kenneth Ofori-Atta (A1), Emmanuel Kofi Nti (A3), Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah (A4), Isaac Crentsil (A5), and Kwadwo Damoah (A6) ensured that there was no established financial management system of monitoring and verification to assure that the Republic was obtaining the value for the money it was paying to SML (8), and the channels of payments of public funds to SML (8) were set on automatic mode by Kenneth Ofori-Atta (A1), Emmanuel Kofi Nti (A3), Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah (A4), Isaac Crentsil (A5), and Kwadwo Damoah (A6) detached from actual performance and based on false and unverified claims in wilful oppressive injury to the public.

The actions of Kenneth Ofori-Atta (A1), Emmanuel Kofi Nti (A3), Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah (A4), Isaac Crentsil (A5), and Kwadwo Damoah (A6) created the opportunity for SML (A8) to largely pretend to perform the services under the various contracts – leading to immense financial loss to the Republic of about One Billion Four Hundred and Thirty-Six Million Two Hundred and Forty-Nine Thousand Eight Hundred and Twenty-Eight Cedis Fifty-Three Pesewas (GHC1,436,249,828.53).

And had they not been halted by the actions of three petitioners who lodged a complaint with the Office of the Special Prosecutor in December 2023 against the criminal enterprise; corruption and corruption-related investigations conducted by the Office of the Special Prosecutor between 20 December 2023 and 3 October 2025; Government intervention of temporarily suspending performance of the purported services in early January 2024; and a directive by the President of the Republic on 31 October 2025 for the termination of all the public contracts awarded to SML (A8) by the Ministry of Finance and Ghana Revenue Authority – the Accused Persons also intended that a further estimated Two Billion Seven Hundred and Ninety-Nine Million Six Hundred and Four Thousand Eight Hundred and Sixty-Four United States Dollars Seventy-One Cents (US$2,799,604,864.71) be paid to SML (A8) for a period of five(5) years without the mandatory statutory prior authorisation by Parliament.

The Accused Persons based their actions on their false claims that SML (A8) possessed technical expertise and capability in revenue assurance, and that the technical expertise and capability of SML (A8) had greatly increased revenue for the Republic; and further that  SML (A8) exclusively possessed the only patented and proven technology systems in the world for value chain transaction audits, external price verification, and measurement audit services in the downstream petroleum, upstream petroleum, and minerals sectors.

Based on the above, the Accused Persons have been charged before the Criminal Division of the High Court.
