Maduro’s Kidnap: The Audacious Ghana’s voice and why it must be amplified

Author: Adnan Adams Mohammed, Award-Winning Journalist and Human Rights Advocate

Ghana is making waves globally with its bold stance on the Venezuelan crisis. The country has condemned the United States’ military action in Venezuela, calling for the immediate release of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. This move underscores Ghana’s commitment to upholding international law and respecting national sovereignty.

Award-winning journalist Adnan Adams Mohammed weighs in on the situation, highlighting Ghana’s principled position against invasion, occupation, and colonialism. “Ghana’s stance is a testament to its dedication to global peace and stability,” Mohammed says.

The Ghanaian government has expressed alarm at the unilateral use of force, stressing that such actions violate the United Nations Charter and undermine international stability. The country’s Foreign Affairs Ministry has warned that attempts to occupy foreign territories and control natural resources have “extremely adverse implications” for global order.

Ghana’s call for restraint and respect for international law echoes the sentiments of many countries, including Russia, China, and several Latin American nations. The international community remains divided, with some supporting the US action as a means to address alleged narco-terrorism, while others see it as a dangerous precedent for regime change.

    Global Consequences

The likely global consequences of Ghana’s call for the release of Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro are multifaceted. The move underscores Ghana’s commitment to upholding international law and respecting national sovereignty, which may influence other countries’ stances on the Venezuelan crisis.

    – Escalation of Geopolitical Tensions: The US intervention in Venezuela may lead to increased tensions between the US and other countries, including Russia and China.

    – Impact on Global Energy Markets: Venezuela’s oil production and exports may be disrupted, affecting global energy prices and supply chains.

    – Shift in Global Alliances: The situation may lead to a realignment of global alliances, with countries taking sides on the Venezuelan crisis.

    – Humanitarian Concerns: The crisis may exacerbate Venezuela’s humanitarian situation, with potential consequences for regional stability and migration patterns.

Ghana’s voice serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding international law and promoting peaceful resolution of conflicts. As the situation unfolds, it’s crucial that Ghana’s stance is amplified and supported by the international community.

    Impact on Global Energy Market

The Venezuelan crisis is sending shockwaves through the global energy market. With Venezuela holding the world’s largest proven oil reserves, any disruption in production could significantly impact global oil prices and energy security.

    Short-term Consequences:

    – Oil prices may experience short-term volatility, with prices potentially rising due to supply uncertainty and geopolitical tensions.

    – The US and other countries may face higher energy costs, affecting domestic energy projects and economic stability.

    – Venezuela’s oil production could drop further, exacerbating global supply chain disruptions.

    Long-term Implications:

    – A potential regime change in Venezuela could lead to increased oil production, with estimates suggesting up to 2 million barrels per day within 18-24 months.

    – However, this increase may be offset by OPEC+ production decisions and global demand shifts.

    – The crisis may accelerate the restructuring of global energy alliances, with countries like Russia and China strengthening their positions.

    Regional and Global Impacts:

    – Neighboring countries, such as Guyana and Colombia, may face regional disputes and energy market fluctuations.

    – Global energy markets will remain volatile, with prices influenced by Venezuelan production, OPEC+ decisions, and shifting global demand.

    – The crisis highlights the need for diversified energy sources and sustainable solutions.

    Consequence on Global South Nations:

The Venezuelan crisis is having far-reaching consequences on the Global South and African nations. South Africa, for instance, has called for an urgent United Nations Security Council session following the unilateral military action by the United States in Venezuela, highlighting the country’s commitment to upholding international law and respecting national sovereignty.

    Economic Impacts:

    – The crisis has led to increased oil price volatility, affecting energy-importing countries in Africa and the Global South.

    – Countries like South Africa may face higher energy costs, impacting economic stability and growth.

    – The situation has also led to increased refugee flows, putting pressure on neighboring countries and regional organizations.

    Regional and Global Implications:

    – The Venezuelan crisis has heightened geopolitical tensions, with countries like Russia, China, and Iran having significant interests in the region.

    – The situation has also raised concerns about regional stability and security, with potential spillover effects in neighboring countries.

    – The international community is divided, with some countries supporting the US action and others condemning it as a breach of sovereignty.

  • West Africa Editors Society Demands Transparency in Fire Service Journalist Assault Case

West Africa Editors Society Demands Transparency in Fire Service Journalist Assault Case

The West Africa Editors Society (WAES) has called for full disclosure of the identities of Ghana National Fire Service officers involved in the assault of journalist Samuel Amado of Class Media Group, according to a statement released on Friday, January 10, 2026.

The incident, which occurred on Monday, January 5, 2026, at a Kasoa new market fire outbreak scene in the Central Region, shows fire officers assaulting Amado while he was covering the event.

President Nana Akufo-Addo cited that some officers have been interdicted, but WAES says the information provided is insufficient and lacks transparency required in a democratic system.

WAES Interim President Emmanuel K Dogbevi emphasized the public’s right to know the names and number of interdicted officers, noting the Fire Service’s Public Relations Officer claimed only one officer was seized for recording an altercation without permission. The society also questioned why only 10 officers were reportedly involved when the journalist said more were present.

WAES stressed that openness in handling the case will promote accountability in governance and ensure journalist safety in Ghana.

Goldbod engages World Gold Council to spur major reforms  …gold traceability and illegal mining dominated discussions

The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) is making significant strides in formalizing the artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) sector, with the World Gold Council (WGC) engaging in discussions on traceability reforms.

This move aims to enhance transparency and accountability in Ghana’s gold industry, a major contributor to the country’s economy.

The reforms include the implementation of a blockchain-based Track and Trace system, set to launch by the end of 2026, ensuring every gram of gold is accounted for from mine to export.

GoldBod CEO Sammy Gyamfi emphasized that this system will verify the legitimate origin of gold, preventing smuggling and promoting responsible mining practices.

Ghana’s gold production has seen a significant boost, with small-scale mining contributing 53% of the country’s total gold exports in 2025, generating over $9 billion in foreign exchange. The government aims to maximize benefits from its gold resources while addressing environmental and social challenges.

The engagement with the World Gold Council underscores Ghana’s commitment to international best practices in gold mining and export. By formalizing the ASM sector, Ghana seeks to increase revenue, improve working conditions, and promote sustainable development.

The Pilgrims Affairs Office of Ghana (PAOG) has declared the closure of payments for the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage, effective 6th January 2026.

The announcement, according to the office, is to ensure proper coordination and smooth organisation of this year’s pilgrimage.

In a statement signed by the Director of Communications, Mohammed Amin Lamptey, PAOG explained that the move is a proactive measure to avoid oversubscription, which has in the past created administrative backlogs and operational challenges.

The office stressed that managing pilgrim numbers within approved limits is vital for a safe and successful Hajj. PRINPAG Condemns Assault on Journalist Samuel Addo, Demands Justice

The Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) has expressed outrage over the assault on Mr. Samuel Addo, a journalist with Class Media Group, who was attacked while carrying out his duties.

In a statement, PRINPAG noted: “This unprovoked attack against a media professional is unacceptable and constitutes a direct violation of press freedom, a right guaranteed under Article 162 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana. Any attempt to intimidate, obstruct, or harm journalists in the course of their work undermines the democratic principles upon which our nation is built.”

The Association has appealed to the Ghana Police Service and the Ministry of the Interior to take immediate steps to investigate the matter. PRINPAG emphasized that “Those responsible must be identified, held accountable, and subjected to the full force of the law. Delivering justice in this case is essential not only for Mr. Addo but also to affirm that such acts will not be tolerated in a democratic society.”

They deserve protection, not harassment,” the statement added.

PRINPAG reaffirmed its support for Mr. Addo and other journalists working under difficult conditions. “We remain committed to safeguarding the rights, safety, and independence of media professionals, and to advocating for a free, safe, and responsible press in Ghana,” the Association stressed.

  • Minority MP praises Mahama govt’s economic management in first year …as Felix Kwakye reviews status of the economy inherited

Minority MP praises Mahama govt’s economic management in first year …as Felix Kwakye reviews status of the economy inherited

Ghana’s political arena is alive with a fiery debate over economic legacy and current performance, with the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) trading accusations over who inherited the worst national balance sheet and who is proving better at fixing it.

The exchange, which played out on a TV discussion program last week, saw NDC Minister for Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, describe the current John Mahama administration as inheriting a “complete shambles” from the previous NPP government, while NPP MP Kojo Oppong Nkrumah acknowledged that the new government had “started well” on economic management, albeit with transparency concerns.

Mahama Inherited “Worst Economic Situation in History”

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, MP for Abura Asebu-Kwamankese, laid the blame for the nation’s fiscal woes squarely at the feet of the previous NPP administration. He argued that President Mahama assumed office under the most severe economic conditions Ghana has ever experienced.

“So you can say that President Mahama inherited the worst possible economic situation in Ghana’s history, and that was superintended by the NPP,” Ofosu asserted.

He pointed to the NPP government’s inability to service national debts, leading to unprecedented debt defaults between 2022 and 2023, as clear evidence of fiscal mismanagement.

“The moment a country fails to pay its debts, you know the economy is in complete shambles. In the last 40 years or so, nothing of that sort had happened,” he added.

Beyond the economy, Ofosu highlighted deep-rooted challenges in the energy sector, education, health, and infrastructure, stressing that any fair assessment of the current government’s performance must be contextualised by the scale of neglect it inherited.

“Fair to Say” Government Has Started Well, But Lacks Candour

In a rare cross-aisle acknowledgment, NPP Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, admitted that the current government has made positive strides in its first year of economic management.

“I think it is fair to say that this government has started well on the economic management front,” the former Information Minister stated, acknowledging the importance of recognizing progress where it occurs, particularly regarding currency stability and the potential reduction in the cost of living.

Oppong Nkrumah takes on the approach

However, Oppong Nkrumah quickly pivoted to criticism regarding the methods used to achieve this stability, specifically concerning the cedi’s appreciation.

He raised serious concerns about transparency, accusing government officials of initially denying the use of specific market interventions to stabilize the currency.

“Initially, they were of the view that they should hide that fact… The president also denied it,” Oppong Nkrumah recalled. He argued that the government only admitted to the strategy after being forced to change its approach and introduce a clearer framework.

    The Sustainability Question

For the NPP MP, while stability is welcome, the sustainability of the methods remains the crucial question. He suggested that the current administration’s ability to intervene in the market is largely due to the programmes inherited from the NPP government which helped accumulate foreign reserves and improve the balance of payments.

“They are able to do that because they inherited a particular programme that helps with the accumulation of reserves,” he claimed.

As 2026 begins, the political narrative remains divided. The NDC is focused on highlighting the progress made in stabilizing an economy they describe as shattered, while the NPP is focused on questioning the transparency and long-term viability of the current administration’s recovery strategy, setting the stage for continued economic debate in the years to come.

  • Ato Forson extols Sammy Gyamfi’s remarkable contribution towards Ghana’s economic recovery

    Walking the talk

    By Adnan Adams Mohammed

Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Ghana’s Minister of Finance, has highlighted the significant milestones achieved in stabilizing the nation’s economy.

According to him, pivotal to his success is the strong collaboration between the Ministry of Finance, the Central Bank, Ghana Gold Board, and the unwavering support of President John Dramani Mahama.

Ghana’s youngest finance minister, in a recent interview on Radio Gold 90.5 FM reflecting on 2025, lauded the contributions of Sammy Gyamfi, praising his drive and determination.

Sammy Gyamfi, CEO of Ghana Gold Board

“Sammy Gyamfi has always come to mind. The President has chosen him and he’s a young man with drive. It’s difficult to get such kinds of people around. And you need someone not only with energy, but he has energy, the drive, the determination, and can-do spirit.” Further acknowledging the critical role of the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) in tightening the money supply and helping to bring down inflation.

    Strategic Reforms and Economic Stabilization

Dr. Forson detailed the comprehensive measures taken to address inflation and structural issues. “Aside from that I had to tackle inflation, I had to tackle the structural issues like how do I build reserves to make sure the currency stabilizes,” he explained.

A key initiative mentioned was the introduction of the Gold Bond, a long-term project designed to bolster the country’s reserves. This initiative, combined with the efforts of the Cocoa Board and reforms within the Central Bank, has played a pivotal role in strengthening Ghana’s economic foundation.

    The President’s Vision and Guidance

Attributing much of the progress to President Mahama’s leadership, Dr. Forson emphasized the importance of the President’s daily involvement and guidance. “There was no way we could achieve even a quarter of what we’ve been able to achieve without the support of the President and his guidance. His vision he has – do this, don’t do this, go here, don’t go here, don’t worry, I’ll back you.”

He noted that the President’s ability to simplify complex technical issues into layman’s terms has been instrumental in the effective implementation of economic policies.

“The benefits of his guidance, the benefits of his support, is there for everybody to see,” Dr. Forson remarked.

    Looking Ahead

With the current trajectory, Dr. Forson expressed optimism for the future of Ghana’s economy. He predicted that the people of Ghana will continue to see a tangible difference in their economic well-being within the next year.
