    100 Dual Desks Delivered to Transform Learning at Have Fiakpokorpe M/A Basic School

    The Have Fiakpokorpe M/A Basic School in the Akatsi South Municipality has received a major boost following the delivery of 100 brand-new dual desks, a timely intervention that is expected to significantly improve the learning environment for pupils who previously studied under distressing conditions.

     

    The initiative was championed by the Assemblymember for the Wuxor–Have–Sremanu Electoral Area, Hon. Japhet Festus Gbede, who hosted a consortium of NGOs led by Vision of Hope Alliance, a subsidiary of PayAngel.

    The desks formed the centerpiece of a broader educational support exercise aimed at restoring dignity and comfort to schoolchildren.

     

    The intervention was coordinated through the efforts of renowned development advocate Mr. Dickson Assan, with support from THX22 Foundation, Legacy Foundation, Aspire Foundation, NurtureUp Legacy Foundation, HR Certification Centre, and several other philanthropic partners.

    Their collaboration ensured the smooth delivery of the 100 dual desks an asset residents described as “a long-awaited relief” for the school.

     

    Beyond the desks, the team also supplied:

    500 reading books

    100+ pairs of shoes

    200+ pieces of clothing

    Confectionery and soft drinks

    40 packs of Verna water

     

    Pupils further benefited from counselling and mentorship sessions facilitated by Seyram Amakpah-Azasu and Jennifer of PayAngel, inspiring many of the children to aim higher.

     

    Hon. Gbede complemented the gesture with school uniforms for vulnerable pupils and assured residents that all donated resources would be “jealously protected and put to their intended use.” He praised Mr. Assan’s continued dedication, referencing his role in drilling a mechanized borehole and donating over 1,000 books and footwear to the community last year.

     

    Looking ahead, Hon. Gbede revealed that he has appealed for further development support, including:

    A Health Center

    A KG Block

    An ICT Centre

    A Starlink internet device to enhance digital access

     

    He also called for investment in agro-processing facilities to address post-harvest losses confronting local garden egg farmers.

     

    Mr. Assan expressed gratitude to the donors and commended Hon. Gbede for his unwavering leadership, describing him as “a dedicated leader who deeply understands the needs of his people.”

     

    Residents hailed the event as historic, emphasizing that the arrival of the 100 dual desks marks a turning point that will directly improve teaching and learning outcomes.

    The strengthened partnership between the Assemblymember and partner NGOs, they said, is bringing real, visible transformation to the community.

    Madam Delali Stephanie Gorni, a contestant in the Mama Avenor Beauty Pageant in the Akatsi South Municipality of the Volta Region, has made a heartfelt appeal to parents to make education the top priority in the upbringing of their children.

     

    Speaking at a quiz competition organized for schools in the Gornikorpe Circuit in Sremanu in the Wuxor , Have, and Sremanu Electoral Area on Thursday, Madam Gorni emphasized that the most valuable inheritance any parent can leave behind for their children is quality education, not material possessions.

     

    She commended the organizers of the quiz for their vision in promoting academic excellence among pupils, noting that such initiatives help to build the confidence and intellectual capacity of young learners, especially those in rural communities.

     

    Madam Gorni encouraged the students to “marry their books” and remain focused on their studies, reminding them that education is the surest key to breaking the cycle of poverty and underdevelopment in their communities.

     

    She further appealed to parents to redirect resources often spent on lavish funerals, clothing, and social events into their children’s education, stressing that such investments will yield long-term benefits for families and the entire community.

     

    “The best gift or inheritance you can ever give to your child is education. When you educate a child, you build a future. Let’s all support our children to stay in school and aim higher,” she said.

    The quiz competition, which brought together pupils from several basic schools in the circuit, aimed at encouraging healthy academic competition and nurturing future leaders from the area.

     

    Madam Gorni also expressed her commitment to continue advocating for educational development within the Avenor area as part of her vision in the ongoing Mama Avenor contest.

     

    She vowed to promote girls child education if given the nod to be the Mama Avenor of the area.

    Russia and Ghana Strengthen Educational Ties

    A delegation of leading Russian universities has arrived in Ghana to expand academic and cultural partnerships between Russia and Ghana.

     

    The visit, organized by the Center for Public Diplomacy (CPD), aims to establish direct academic ties, promote Russian language studies, and explore student and faculty exchange opportunities.

     

    The delegation, comprising representatives from Novosibirsk State Technical University, Saint Petersburg State University, and Russian University of Transport, will meet with Ghanaian universities, including the University of Ghana and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

    This visit marks a new stage in Russian-Ghanaian academic cooperation, focusing on joint educational programs, dual-degree programs, and distance learning courses in Russian.

    The CPD also plans to open new Russian Houses in Ghana, Libya, and Mali in 2025 to promote Russian language, culture, and education

    The visit is part of the CPD’s broader initiative to strengthen humanitarian relations between Russia and African nations.

    The “Partner Russian Houses of the Center for Public Diplomacy” project aims to promote a positive image of Russia, support the spread of the Russian language, and encourage educational and cultural exchange, Micah Zing, Director of International Communications and Co-Founder of the Representative Office of the Center for Public Diplomacy in the Republic of Ghana told journalists during a briefing session in Accra today.

     

    Also, Dr. Natalia Krasovskaya, Executive Director of the Center for Public Diplomacy, emphasized the importance of building long-term partnerships between Russian and Ghanaian universities.

     

    “Our goal is to create a platform for sustainable cooperation, innovation, and knowledge exchange between Russia and Ghana,” she said.

     

    The delegation’s meetings with Ghanaian universities and institutions are expected to yield fruitful outcomes, including the launch of joint educational programs and student exchange initiatives.

     

    The CPD’s Representative Office in Ghana is optimistic that the visit will mark a significant milestone in Russian-Ghanaian academic cooperation.

     

    The Russian universities will also participate in cultural events and meet with local students to promote Russian language and culture. The visit is expected to further strengthen the ties between Russia and Ghana, promoting mutual understanding and cooperation in education, culture, and beyond.

    Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) has promoted Joseph Mensah Abakah the position of Major Market Account Executive for the Central Zone. In this new role, will oversee retail banking activities in the region, in addition to his existing responsibilities in MSMEs banking.

     

    Abakah Mensah’s promotion is a testament to his dedication and expertise in the banking industry. With a background in business accounting and human resources management, he has demonstrated a commitment to supporting micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) during his tenure at ADB.

     

    Prior to joining ADB, Abakah Mensah worked as a professional teacher and later served as the Municipal Director for the Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly under the Youth Employment Agency. He holds a Post-Diploma (Bachelor’s Degree) in Psychological Foundation of Education from the University of Cape Coast and currently pursuing MA in HRM at University of Cape Coast

    Gov’t pays GH₵994 per student to private schools under Free SHS – Min. of Education

    The Ministry of Education has pledged to pay GH₵994 per student annually to support private schools participating in this year’s Free Senior High School (SHS) programme.

    The commitment was announced during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry and the Conference of Heads of Private Second Cycle Schools, formalising the inclusion of selected private SHSs in the Free SHS policy.

    Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu explained that the support, which is expected to benefit about 25,000 students, forms part of the government’s efforts to eliminate the double-track system in public schools.

    “The government is committed to providing a stipend to support the transition of that category of students moving into private schools—that’s negotiable, we’ll still discuss as and when,” he said.

    “But for a start, that’s the commitment we make to the Ghana National Council of Private Schools for this pilot inclusion of selected private schools in the provision of Free Senior High School education, as part of the government’s effort to end double track.”

    President of the Conference of Heads of Private Second Cycle Schools, I.K. Mensah, commended the government for the initiative and clarified the terms of the pilot programme.

    “And the caveat is that, for now, during this pilot system, he’s going to place only day schools to us by the payment of 994 Cedis for a child in private second-cycle schools,” he explained.

    He further noted that parents who wish to have their wards as boarders can make up the difference between the government’s payment and the school’s boarding fees.

    “Now, what is happening is that we know some private schools have different payments, different plans, and different payments for boarders and all that. So, if you are placed as a day student and you think your child comes from far and wants to access boarding facilities at that school, then you sit with the school and pay the difference between what the school is charging,” he said.

    “For example, if it’s 2,000, it means the government has already paid or is going to pay 994 for that child who has come there. It’s up to you, the parent and the school, to pay the difference of, let’s say, 1,060 Cedi so that the child becomes a full-time boarding student.

    So, what the government is giving us now is for day students, and they are to pay, or the government is going to pay, 994 Cedi for this pilot program.”

    Ghana made a strong impression at the 2nd African Shenmo Cup International Abacus Mental Olympiad held at the Kigali Conference and Exhibition Village in Rwanda, as Shenmo Ghana swept top honours in a highly competitive event.

    Representing Ghana, Ridwan Mahmoud Jajah and Ummu Sulaim Abass of Al-Hikmah Islamic Montessori School emerged winners, clinching 1st and 3rd place respectively out of over 300 contestants drawn from 30 African countries including Kenya, Rwanda, Libya, Zambia, Mozambique, Mali, Namibia, Nigeria, Tanzania and Cameroon.

    Both Ridwan and Ummu also won two gold medals and two trophies for Ghana in the Level 1 category, following an impressive display of Abacus Mental Math skills.

    The Ghanaian contingent was led by Shenmo Ghana Principal, Mr. Musa Frimpong, and Abacus Instructor, Mr. Joseph Gyebi. The victorious team is expected to arrive back home on Wednesday, 22nd October 2025.

    Congratulations have poured in for Team Ghana, represented by Shenmo Ghana and Al-Hikmah Islamic Montessori School, for lifting the nation’s flag high and making the country proud on the international stage.

    The Member of Parliament for Agona West Constituency, Hon. Mrs. Ernestina Ofori Dangbey, has launched three major community-centered projects aimed at enhancing development, accessibility, and educational support within the constituency.

    The event, which took place on Saturday, 4th October 2025, at the forecourt of the MP’s Office (P.W.D.), Agona Swedru was attended by party executives, traditional leaders, students, parents, and residents from all parts of the constituency.

    The atmosphere was filled with excitement and appreciation as the MP unveiled the opening of a new party office, the launch of “Operation Call Your MP”, and a donation exercise for needy and best-performing BECE candidates, as well as scholarships for some underprivileged tertiary students.

    In her address, Hon. Ofori Dangbey emphasized her commitment to accessible leadership and community empowerment, noting that the three projects reflect her dedication to both party organization and social welfare.

    “Leadership must always be about service. The new party office will serve as a home for everyone a place where ideas, concerns, and solutions for the development of Agona West can be shared freely,” she said.

    She further explained that the “Operation Call Your MP” initiative seeks to bridge the gap between constituents and their representative in Parliament.

    “This is a new era of open-door leadership. I want every citizen, especially the youth, to feel free to reach out, to share their needs, and to take part in shaping the future of our constituency,” she added.

    As part of the day’s activities, the MP presented items including mattresses, school supplies, and essential learning materials to students who excelled in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), as well as those identified as needy within the constituency.

    Beneficiaries and parents expressed deep appreciation for the gesture.

    “This support means a lot to us. My son can now attend school comfortably thanks to the MP’s kindness,” said one grateful parent.

    “Hon. Ernestina Ofori Dangbey has shown that she truly cares about our children’s future,” another resident remarked.

    Local party officials also lauded the MP for her proactive leadership and people-centered approach, describing her as a symbol of hope and progress for the Agona West constituency.

    President of the Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG), David Tamakloe, is in New York to cover the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which runs from September 23 to 30, 2025. He departed Accra on September 21 to join global leaders, diplomats, and journalists at this high-level gathering.

    Private SHS placement comes with no extra fees – GES DG

    The Ghana Education Service (GES) has emphasised that students placed in the 70 selected private Senior High Schools and Technical Vocational Institutes will bear no extra fees or dues for the three years of their schooling.

    Professor Ernest Davis, Director-General of GES, explains that the selected private schools benefit from the free-SHS capitation grant which covers all the teacher, teaching and learning materials related costs of all students as well the school feeding.

    For the first time under the free-SHS scheme, 70 private second cycle institutions have been selected to receive students at no extra cost to the students. This falls in line with the NDC manifesto promise made by the current President John Mahama. The initiative will help absorb the burden on the overstretched public second cycle institutions while expanding access to quality secondary education for more students.

    The initiative is a pilot phase in collaboration with the Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS) as the Ministry of Education, GES, and GNACOPS are expected to coordinate capacity-building, training, and infrastructure support for the selected schools.

    “Students placed in the private schools do not need to pay any fees. All of them have been captured under the capitation grant including their feeding. So parents whose wards are eligible for self-placement can consider the private schools”, Prof Davis said while answering a question during a press briefing in Accra.

    The Ministry of Education last week announced the release of the 2025 school placements for candidates who sat for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

    Out of 603,328 students who wrote the exams, 590,309 qualified for placement into Senior High Schools (SHSs), Senior High Technical Schools (SHTSs), and Technical and Vocational Institutions (TVIs).

    According to the Ministry, 483,800 candidates, representing 82 percent, have been automatically placed, while 107,509 candidates will have to use the self-placement portal.

    Deputy Education Minister Dr. Clement Apaak explained that the high demand for top-tier schools meant some candidates could not be matched with their preferred choices. He encouraged affected students to use the self-placement system, which is now active.

    This year, the Ministry is piloting 70 private schools under the Free SHS Programme. Initially, only 21 were included during school selection, but all 70 are now accessible on the placement portal.

    In total, the placement exercise covers 724 public SHSs/SHTSs, 233 TVIs, and 70 private SHSs. Resolution centres have also been set up at district, regional, and national levels, with the GNAT Hall in Accra serving as the national centre.

    The Ministry reminded parents and guardians that placement is free and cautioned against making payments to individuals in exchange for placement.

  • Mahama leads Ghana delegation to UNGA 80 in New York

     

     

     

    President John Dramani Mahama has departed Accra for New York, USA, leading a high-level delegation to the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 80), which commences on Tuesday, 23 September.

     

    President Mahama is slated to address the General Assembly on Thursday, 25 September 2025, a statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu (MP), Spokesperson to the President and Minister in-charge of Government Communications.

     

    In his capacity as the African Union’s champion for financial instutions, President Mahama will host two significant side events. His itinerary also includes crucial bilateral mee8ngs with the UN Secretary-General, various heads of state, and global leaders, such as the President of the Rockefeller Foundation.

     

    “President Mahama will also engage with the US-Africa Chamber of Commerce and make a historic visit to NASDAQ, where he is expected to ring the closing bell”, the statement noted.

    Accompanying the President, First Lady Mrs Lordina Dramani Mahama is set to attend and address side events organised by the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD) and will deliver the keynote address at a special World Vision International prayer service dedicated to the world’s children.

    The President’s delegation includes Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, Executive Secretary, Dr Callistus Mahama, Special Aide and Presidential Advisor, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Deputy Chief of Staff (Finance and Administration) and Technical Adviser to the First Lady, Nana Oye Bampoe Addo.

    Others are: Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (MP), Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh (MP), Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Trade, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare and Chief Executive of the Ghana Investment Promotions Centre, Simon Madjie.

    President Mahama and his delegation are expected to return to Ghana on 30 September 2025.
