President John Dramani Mahama has stated that the Presidency has completed its part in the process of suspending Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, and now awaits the findings of the investigative committee established to probe the claims against her removal.
Speaking at the Jubilee House on July 7, 2025, Mahama described the predicament as “difficult” and thanked the Council of State for their involvement.
He emphasized that his administration has acted within the bounds of the Constitution and that future actions will be guided by the committee’s report.
“We’ve done our part. The rest is left with the committee that was set up to come out with whatever its findings are, and based on that, whatever the consequential issues are, will be dealt with,” Mahama said.
Meanwhile, Chief Justice Torkornoo has taken her case to the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice in Abuja, Nigeria, alleging human rights violations stemming from her suspension.
Her lawyers argue that the suspension effectively removed her from office without due process, violating her constitutional rights.
The committee’s report is expected to determine whether Chief Justice Torkornoo will be reinstated or permanently removed from office. The suspension has sparked intense squabble, with concerns raised about the implications for judicial independence.
