ABUJA, NIGERIA — In a strategic move to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties between West Africa and Southeast Asia, the President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Omar Alieu Touray, received a high-level delegation from the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
The delegation, led by the Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Le Anh Tuan, was received at the ECOWAS Commission Headquarters in Abuja on June 30, 2026.
The high-level meeting underscored a mutual desire to deepen diplomatic relations and expand economic cooperation between the regional bloc and the Asian nation.
A Partnership Built on Shared Prosperity
During the deliberations, both leaders reaffirmed the commitment of the ECOWAS Commission and the Government of Vietnam to building a robust, long-term partnership. According to officials, the future of this relationship will be anchored on mutual respect, shared prosperity, and common global interests.
The discussions centered on several critical pillars aimed at driving sustainable development and economic growth, including:
● Food Security: Leveraging Vietnam’s agricultural expertise to enhance agricultural value chains and sustainability across West Africa.
● Trade and Investment: Opening new market pathways and lowering barriers for bilateral trade.
● Bilateral Agreements: Developing formal frameworks to streamline diplomatic, economic, and technological cooperation.
Optimism for the Future
Both H.E. Omar Alieu Touray and H.E. Le Anh Tuan expressed strong optimism that this high-profile engagement will serve as a catalyst for concrete, actionable initiatives.
“This engagement paves the way for enhanced cooperation that will yield tangible benefits for both the peoples of West Africa and Vietnam,” a joint statement noted, highlighting future collaboration in key areas of mutual interest.
