In a major push to eliminate long-distance travel for critical medical emergencies, the Ministry of Health has announced a massive infrastructure expansion to build state-of-the-art regional hospitals in all six of Ghana’s newly created regions.
The ambitious project aims to bring specialized tertiary healthcare, advanced diagnostics, and modern surgical theatres directly to the doorsteps of residents in the Oti, Savannah, North East, Bono East, Western North, and Ahafo regions, fundamentally reshaping the country’s clinical referral network.
Following the creation of the six new regions Oti, Savannah, North East, Bono East, Western North, and Ahafo the lack of centralized regional referral hospitals has forced many residents to travel long distances to older regional capitals for intensive or specialized medical care.
According to the Health Minister, the new regional hospitals will serve as the premier clinical referral hubs within their respective territories. The multi-million-cedi projects will feature state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment, modern intensive care units (ICUs), surgical theatres, maternal and child health wings, and dedicated staff accommodation to attract top medical professionals to the areas.
The first phase of the deployment is set to kick off seamlessly with initial funding allocations already secured under the state’s prioritized capital expenditure budget.
A Comprehensive Healthcare Vision
The construction of these six regional hospitals forms a central pillar of the government’s broader strategy to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and build a more resilient national health network.
The Minister emphasized that the project works hand-in-hand with ongoing primary care upgrades, including the construction of standard district hospitals and the digitalization of medical record-keeping across the country.
“We owe our people excellence and results, not excuses,” the Minister stated, reaffirming that no region will be left behind in the distribution of critical state assets.
Timelines and Value for Money
The Ministry of Health has given firm assurances that strict monitoring and evaluation frameworks have been put in place to ensure that all six hospital projects are completed within their specified timelines and budgets.
To prevent past challenges with abandoned structures, the ministry is working closely with regional coordinating councils and international development partners to streamline supply chains and ensure that construction moves forward smoothly without bureaucratic delays. Once completed, the hospitals will drastically reduce emergency response times and lower the mortality rates associated with delayed referral care across the six regions.
