Parliament has approved the nominations of Mahama Ayariga and Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings for their respective ministerial appointments following a voting session and the presentation of the Appointments Committee’s report on the floor of the House.
Under the approved nominations, Mahama Ayariga assumes the leadership of the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, while Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings takes charge of the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation.
Debates and House Approval
The approval followed deliberate discussions by Members of Parliament on the recommendations submitted by the Appointments Committee. Presenting the report, the Leadership of the Appointments Committee highlighted the nominees’ compliance with constitutional requirements, public service track records, and strategic visions outlined during their vetting sessions.
Speaking on the floor during the motion for approval, the Chairman of the Appointments Committee commended both nominees for their readiness to address national priorities.
“Both nominees demonstrated deep competency and a clear policy direction for their respective portfolios during the vetting process. Honourable Ayariga showed a robust strategy for fiscal decentralization, while Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings articulated practical measures to tackle environmental degradation and climate adaptation,” the Committee Chairman stated.
Priority Areas for Local Government and Decentralization
Taking over the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga faces immediate calls to strengthen local governance frameworks, accelerate financial releases to Assemblies, and foster collaboration with traditional authorities to resolve land and chieftaincy disputes.
Supporting the approval, a Majority Member of Parliament emphasized the significance of Ayariga’s leadership for local governance reform:
“Local governance is the backbone of national development. Hon. Ayariga brings extensive parliamentary and administrative experience to this role. We expect him to push forward the agenda for enhanced decentralization, ensuring local assemblies are adequately resourced to drive grassroot development.”
Climate Action and Environmental Management
Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings steps into the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation at a critical period as the nation grapples with ecological challenges, including illegal small-scale mining (galamsey), deforestation, and urban waste management.
Addressing the House following the approval, a Minority Member of Parliament urged the new Environment Minister to remain firm on environmental compliance and scientific innovation:
“Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings takes on a tough portfolio. The state of our water bodies and forests requires non-partisan, decisive action. We urge her to enforce environmental laws strictly, harness technology for sustainable development, and prioritize science-led climate solutions.”

With parliamentary approval secured, both Ministers-designate will take their formal oaths of office administered by the Executive before officially assuming duties in their respective ministries.
