Black Stars in turmoil as GFA axes Otto Addo following humiliating defeats

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially terminated the contract of Otto Addo as head coach of the senior men’s national team, the Black Stars.

The decision, announced today, comes in the wake of a disastrous string of results that has left the nation’s football fans in a state of shock and concern.

The final straw for the GFA leadership was a series of crushing defeats in recent international friendlies.

Ghana suffered a 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Austria, followed by a 2-1 loss to Germany.

These results extended Addo’s losing streak to four consecutive matches and heightened anxieties regarding the team’s tactical direction.

In an official statement released this morning, the Association confirmed the immediate departure of the former Borussia Dortmund talent coach:

”The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has parted ways with the Head Coach of the senior men’s national team (Black Stars), Otto Addo, effective immediately. The Association wishes to thank Otto Addo sincerely for his contribution to the team and wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavours.”

The timing of the dismissal is particularly critical. Ghana is currently in the final stages of preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The Black Stars face a daunting challenge in the tournament, having been drawn into a difficult group alongside England, Croatia, and Panama.

Critics and supporters alike had grown increasingly vocal about Addo’s tenure, citing a lack of tactical consistency and the team’s recent inability to compete against high-ranking opposition. While the GFA expressed gratitude for Addo’s service, the governing body made it clear that a new direction is required to restore confidence before the global showpiece.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the GFA has not named a successor.

The Association indicated that it would communicate the “new technical direction” of the Black Stars in due course. Speculation is already rife among the Ghanaian sporting public, with names of both local and international candidates being suggested to take over the high-pressure role.

For now, the Black Stars remain without a leader as the clock ticks down to the 2026 World Cup kickoff.
