    The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) is set to improve the working conditions and remuneration of fuel tanker drivers and their mates nationwide, CEO Edudzi Tamaklo (Esq.) reiterated at a media event yesterday.

    Lawyer Tamaklo emphasized the necessity of such a policy and the readiness of the Authority to commence implementation as soon as possible.

    The decision to pay fuel transport workers followed a high-level meeting between the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, and the leadership of the Ghana National Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union (GNPTDU).

    “The policy will impact on critical issues affecting petroleum tanker drivers, including their welfare, the need for a fair and structured salary regime, and the elimination of unlawful surcharges”, he said, noting that, “resolving these issues is essential to maintaining stability, safety, and efficiency in Ghana’s petroleum supply and distribution network.”

    Highlights of the Policy Framework:

    Standardized Payment Structure: The NPA will develop a standardized payment structure to ensure consistency and fairness in remuneration;

    Allowances for Long-Distance Hauls: Drivers will receive additional allowances for long-distance trips; and

    Improved Safety and Welfare: The policy emphasizes driver safety, medical allowances, and insurance coverage.

    Lawyer Tameklo stated that the draft policy aims to standardize the payment structure for tanker drivers, ensuring consistency and fairness. He emphasized that better remuneration would enable drivers to support their families, reduce fuel diversions, and enhance safe transportation of petroleum products.

    The policy framework is pending approval from the Governing Board of the NPA. Once approved, it is expected to bring relief to over 5,000 fuel tanker drivers nationwide.

    Energy experts hail the move, saying it will boost the morale of drivers, enhance safety, and contribute to the overall stability of Ghana’s energy sector.
