Black Stars coaching saga: Joachim Löw and Kwesi Appiah deny contact as GFA search continues

The search for a new head coach for the Black Stars has taken a dramatic turn as two high-profile candidates, former World Cup winner Joachim Löw and former Ghana coach James Kwesi Appiah, have both distanced themselves from reports linking them to the vacant seat.

This development comes in the wake of the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) decision to part ways with Otto Addo, a move GFA President Kurt Okraku has vehemently defended as being in the “best interest of the nation.”

    Low Silences Rumors

Earlier this week, reports surfaced suggesting that the GFA had opened formal negotiations with Joachim Löw, the man who led Germany to global glory in 2014. The prospect of a coach of Löw’s pedigree taking over the Black Stars sent shockwaves through the Ghanaian football community.

However, representatives for the German tactician have since denied any contact with the GFA.

According to sources close to the coach, while Löw remains open to new projects, no formal or informal discussions have taken place regarding the Black Stars job.

    Kwesi Appiah Rejects Return Claims

Similarly, James Kwesi Appiah, who has served two previous stints as the Black Stars head coach, has moved to debunk rumors that he is in talks for a third term. Despite public calls for a local coach to lead the team into the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Appiah clarified that he has not been approached by the GFA’s search committee.

”I have seen the reports, but there is no truth to them,” Appiah stated, adding that his current focus remains elsewhere, despite his enduring love for the national team.

    GFA Defends “Tough” Decisions

The coaching vacancy was created following the exit of Otto Addo. While some fans and pundits criticized the timing of the change, GFA President Kurt Okraku has stood firm. Speaking at a recent press briefing, Okraku emphasized that the decision to move on from Addo was not personal but strategic.

”The decision puts Ghana first,” Okraku said. “We are heading into a critical period with the World Cup on the horizon, and we need a leadership structure that ensures we are not just participants, but competitors.”

    The Way Forward

The conflicting reports have left the Ghanaian football public in a state of suspense. While the GFA was rumored to be targeting a “world-class” foreign manager like Löw, the denials from the candidates’ camps suggest that either the GFA is keeping their true targets a closely guarded secret, or the search has hit an early stumbling block.

As the GFA search committee continues its work, the clock is ticking. With crucial fixtures looming, the Ghanaian faithful are eager for a resolution that will bring stability and success back to the four-time African champions.
